At the same time, they haven't lost any of their Irish charisma that underlines every one of their songs. Another strength of the band is their ability to always produce fantastic 'B' sides. Often a place to stick less impressive offerings, the Divine Comedy tuck some of their best tracks at the end of a s...more

Premium Review Divine Comedy in general: Divine or not...? (92 words)

I must admit my first reaction to The Divine Comedy was hardly favourable but have since changed my mind and now really enjoy a lot of their music. I did not find the instant attraction, which many people must, but they are a good band and songs such as "The Pop Singer's Fear of the Pollen Count" make the Divine Comedy a very good and interesting band. I would not count myself as a dedicated fan but as an outsider looking in, they seem to be very good. ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review A great History (707 words)

This is a review of A Secret History(Best of Divine Comedy). Neil Hannon is the main talent (and superb talent too) behind The Divine Comedy. Many might have heard their hit singles, and may not realise who they are. Their first song which got them in the public eye was 'Something for the Weekend'. This was first played on Radio 1 and apparently they were having problems with the CD so a member of the public rang in and played his copy of the CD over the phone so everyone could hear. I feel I need to share the lyrics for this song to show Neil's style. --------------------------------------------- (Ohhh.... I say) (How ...  Read the complete review

I can't actually remember how I heard about the divine comedy, I think i heard something for the weekend on the radio and thought it was damn good! I persuaded my mother to buy me Casonova for Christmas that year and I was not disapointed. One of my favourite songs has to Becoming more like Alfie, pure class. How would I sum up the Divine comedy's music? well, it is a refreshing change to hear something of class, it isnt out and out pop. Neill Hannon has a unique voice which should be given a chance. Not many of my friends like the Divine Comedy but they all recognised Songs of Love off the Cassonova album, they remarked 'hey isn't that ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Divine Comedy (374 words)

The Divine Comedy have to be one of the most unique bands around at the moment; for a start they weren't actually a band until 1996. Then it was just Neil Hannon singing and playing a variety of instruments from harpsichord to guitar, with the accompniment of a string quartet, and only occassionaly a drummer. Neil Hannon's style is distinctly out of step with the fashions of music as he sings in a deep baritone, clearly trying to emulate the voice of Scott Walker; sometimes successfully and sometimes less so. A lot of the music on recent albums such as 'A short album about love' and 'Fin de Siecle' strongly resemble the sounds on ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Divine Comedy in general: The end of an era (377 words)

I was really saddened to hear of the decision by the Divine Comedy to split up. I am a relatively new fan, only really becoming familiar with their music around 6 years ago. Introduced to their 'Casanova' album by my sister, I fell in love with the entrancing blend of orchestral instruments and electric guitars, and of course, the intoxicating voice of Neil Hannon. They have never failed to impress me since then. Amazing to watch live, their recent appearance at the V2001 festival was energetic and as always, very entertaining. Their musical sound has evolved and matured over the years, with their most recent album 'Regeneration' suitably entitled to ...  Read the complete review
