Advantages: Beautiful voice, unbeatable live performance

Disadvantages: Nowhere near enough live performances

Eddi Reader has one of the most beautiful female voices around and is a very talented songwriter and musician. How very sad that her voice is probably best known for the song "Perfect", which was immortalised by the Asda advertisement! This she sung back in 1988, as the lead singer with Fairground Attraction. Although it was successful in the singles charts, it was in my opinion somewhat humdrum and definitely not a patch on the work which Eddi has produced since.

Since Fairground Attraction split up, Eddi has produced some breathtaking solo work, including the albums "Eddi Reader", "Candy Floss and Medicine" and "Angels and Electricity" and the single "Patience of Angels". Her work is perhaps best described as modern folk in style, but words cannot really do it justice, she has such a beautiful and clear voice and an excellent range. Hearing Eddi sing live is the most moving experience, as she adds a rare depth of feeling to both lyrics and delivery, but at the same time comes over as very human as she jokes and chats about her family to the audience.

Although not a hugely well-known artist, she has a very loyal following. In the wide scheme of things she is definitely underrated but consistently gives the impression that she believes in her work and is in fact happier than if she had stayed in mainstream pop.

For any other fans, I recommend the following web sites:

and
www01.u-page.so-net.ne.jp/ca2/soullove/eddi/ER _Home_e.html

For anyone who is not yet a fan, I recommend the most recent album, "Angels and Electricity". Thirteen tracks and not one of them is less than "perfect"!

I love Eddi Reader. I first fell in love with her music after seeing her play a tiny venue in Norwich. It was just amazing and rates as one of my best concerts, along with REM and Tori Amos. She is great indeed. I like 'Eddi Reader' best out of all the albums.

Hi Hope,
I just thought I'd share with you that I saw the composer of "Patience of Angels", Boo Hewerdine, live in an intimate venue in Paris. He's an intensely appealing and compelling performer, and a lovely guy (I was lucky enough to meet and chat with him). He performed "Patience" fantastically and I quite hated Eddi for having a hit with it, rather than him!
I'd place Boo somewhere between Peter Gabriel and Glenn Campbell (!) and recommend having a listen if you don't know him already.
