I deplore statements like "Elgar is the greatest composer this country has seen since....whatever..." How one rates the greatest, I cannot say. However, Elgar stands head and shoulders above many composers and his legacy is indeed great. What I like about Elgar, and maybe this is a measure of greatness, is that not only did he leave us monumental works for orchestra, the TWO symphonies and the violin and cello concertos, and similarly towering choral works like "The Dream of Gerontius" (in which he sets the words of Cardinal Newman with such perfection that it seems that the poem was written specifically for Elgar - it wasn't) but he ...
