Advantages: Fantastic bck catalogue
Disadvantages: A British embarrassment
Elton John, what has happened to him? I don't know whether to laugh or cry when I see him. Here is a man who has been responsible for some of the finest and most entertaining albums of the last 30 years but who is now, seemingly, a sad old man who is camp beyond belief! Of course, everyone who's anyone is a big mate of Elton. I mean, fellow has-been George Michael and future has-beens The Spice Slappers are all big buddies and I reckon they all swap stories about how wonderful their 'Audience With' programmes were and how they were totally NOT contrived and scripted. Yeah, right - we believe you. Not! Captain Fantastic and The Browndirt Cowboy is my favourite Elton John album and it's from 1975. Before and after that Elton pumped out album after album of great music along with ace lyricist Bernie Taupin. We can forgive him the odd blip - Victim of Love was an appalling slab of dirge and Leather Jackets was despicble. But in between those Elton gave us such gems as 'Jump Up' with it's tribute to John Lennon and superb war narritive 'All Quiet on The Western Front'; 'Too Low For Zero' with the unforgettable 'I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues' and moving 'One More Arrow'; 'Sleeping With The Past' with the beautiful 'Sacrifice'. But then it all went in the shape of a big pear. Suddenly everyone became Elton's friend and a sad Duets album paved the way for an onslaught of scmaltz and dirge often only associated with Englebert Humperdumperdink. A quick move back on course with the satisfying 'Made in England' CD sadly doesn't forgive the vomit induction that was The Lion King and what on earth is Elton John's Road To Eldorado meant to be? Come on now, you've made pots of money and had a bloody good time along the way - please spare us any more of this cabaret and clear off before you turn into Lily Savage. It was that doc
umentary a few years back that did it for me. It showed Elton John to be a spoiled, insecure man seemingly unable to appreciate his impact on the musical world. These days he proves that he is unable to fit in with the music world and it makes me feel sick when I see him being all lovey lovey with people. If he feels the need to lower himself to the depths of The Spice Girls and Steps then a lot of fans won't be going down there with him. I for one won't be interested in anything else he has to offer. I just want to remember how great he was. One point in EJ's favour - great contribution on the new Collective Soul CD (Blender). Shows he CAN still cut it Now, is George Michael heading the same way? Just look at the similarities! Scary!
