Advantages: Great night
Disadvantages: Nothing
So, last week I celebrated my 30th Birthday. It's considered a milestone, and I know my wife had something planned as a surprise. On the morning of Friday 6th June, she handed me a card, saying Happy Birthday, hope you enjoy it! I opened the card to find four tickets to see the Foo Fighters that evening at Wembley Stadium. What a present! I'd first noticed they were doing this gig in January, and was gutted to find they had sold out. However, my wife spotted the gig in November and bought Friday tickets straight away.
So, off we went to Wembley. We just caught the end of Supergrass, who were supporting the Foos, and got ourselves a beer and settled in our seats for the gig. Just after 8pm, out they came to rapturous applause, spent a couple of minutes basking in the applause and whistles before launching into a non stop tirade of Foo Fighters hits for the best part of two and a half hours!
What a performance! The show was broadcast live on Radio 1, and is said to be the best Foos gig ever. On the Saturday night, Led Zeppelin came out on stage with them, so I missed that. but the Friday night atmosphere was electric. It was an epic gig. I have long been a fan of the Foo Fighters, but mainly their commercial stuff. It wasn't until I wasn given a copy of the live album Skiin & Bones that they did a few years back that I really started appreciating the range of musical talent on offer.
Throughout the gig, they gave each other breaks. Dave Grohl, frontman for the group and former drummer for Nirvana, would come down the runway for a guitar solo thus resting the rest of the band. Similarly, there would be instrumental sections to give his voice a break.
My highlight of the show came during the introductions. Dave Grohl introduced the majority of the band including Chris Sugar and Nate Mendel, before turning to his drummer, indicating him, announcing the guy who made the tour happen, only to then shout 'Drew, the triangle guy!' The guy playing the triangle then came to the front and did a triangle solo to a standing ovation (not that everyone wasn't already on their feet!). My favourite part came straight after when Grohl introduced his drummer, Taylor Hawkins, who then sang 'Cold Day In The Sun', my favourite Foos track.
The show ended before 10pm, but there was the obvious encore, but what an encore, with tracks such as 'Best Of Me', 'All My Life' and 'Monkey Wrench' included in the five song encore.
By the end of the gig, I was knackered. I had been singing non stop and on my feet for a lot of it. Spare a thought then for the guys on stage. They had just performed an epic gig that I am so grateful to my wife for taking me to. It's the best gig I've ever been to. No doubt I'll be going to see them again next time they tour.
Summary: Foo Fighters: hardest working band
