Foo Fighters – One By One

01. All My Life – 9/10
One of the greatest tracks on the album, hard, catchy rock.

02. Low – 8/10
The heaviest track on the album, and although there is little variation in the song it will prove popular with moshers.

03. Have It All – 8/10
Typical Foo Fighters, it wont win any points for originality but it is certainly going to be a favourite with long-time fans.

04. Times Like These – 8/10
Grohl sounds passionate as he relays an important message about times when you learn to live again. Typical Foo Fighters but with a blend of heavier drumming - very powerful.

05. Disenchanted Lullaby – 6/10
Attempts to build up a song from something soft to rock but it happens too quickly to create much impact. It had potential but it just wasn’t long enough.

06. Tired Of You – 5/10
Great start but it never progresses anywhere, a song that you will grow tired of, disappointing.

07. Halo – 5/10
Borderline average, it’s just a standard song, nothing more, nothing less.

08. Lonely As You – 7/10
Grohl blames loneliness on a series of things, it certainly puts the album back into the realms of respectability but it still seems to lack the “wow” factor. A nice build up into a rocky chorus.

09. Overdrive – 8/10
Classic Foo Fighters - nice and uplifting. A song that will potentially become a single.

10. Burn Away – 6/10
The song starts off promisingly with a gritty guitar riff but fails to impress as Grohl doesn’t sound passionate about the music as he whines the chorus – a disappointment.

11. Come Back – 6/10
Not exactly a great song to end the album with, a song that sounds little more than average until it builds up into the chorus and Grohl tells us “I will come back,” so I guess another Foo
album awaits us…

Dave Grohl has been known to produce musical master pieces ever since his time at Nirvana. After the success of the last album, Foo Fighters have released a rather different album in the form of One By One. As soon as the album commences it is clear that the Foo’s have matured their style into a heavier rock approach. The strumming baseline in All My Life is complimented beautifully with the soft voice of Grohl into a heavier song that many a mosher could enjoy. For your average rock fan this song will be warmly received but for long time Foo fans the change from upbeat happy rock to a more serious hard rock in your face style will surprise.
One By One seems to be an experimental album as there is a mix of classic style Foo Fighers music in the form of “Have It All,” hard rock such as “Low,” and some interesting offerings such as “Tired Of You,” a track that starts off in a Nirvana like way but then never progresses into anything other than singing and a soft melody. “Tired Of You,” is one of the weaker tracks on the album as it shows a lack of direction and is too repetitive, something that Foo Fighter’s fans would not expect. The result that One By One achieves by mixing Foo styles is that it just leaves the listener feeling confused for one minute they can be churning out potential classics such as All My Life and the lively but effective Low and then they can produce something fairly standard such as Halo.
One must give Foo Fighters credit for experimenting but it is important that come the next album they have decided whether they want to be a heavier rock band or an upbeat band as we have seen before producing the likes of Monkey Wrench. This album is by no means the worst album in the world, and in fact is far from it but for one reason or another it just hasn’t lived up to the expectations that one would hope for from a band such as Foo Fighters. Fo
r fans wanting to listen to some Grohl work check out Songs For The Deaf by Queens Of The Stone Age, Nirvana’s greatest hits or the previous Foo Fighter’s album. If you feel the need to buy this album then by all means enjoy the great music such as the rather catchy “Overdrive” and “Lonely As You” (debatably the song with the most meaning and emotion on the album) but also take into account that this is a mixed bag for with the great their also comes the dire.
