Advantages: From Bradford, From Bradford, From Bradford

Disadvantages: Pop, Got Beat, Pop

In Bradford, Gareth Gates is the man of the moment. He wouldn’t be able to step outside his front door with out the all the female Teenagers in Bradford running after him screaming his name. That is just how popular he is.

The reason for that is because you don't often hear of any big stars being born and bred in Bradford. Think about it. Do YOU know any one else this famous who was raised in the west Yorkshire city? The answer is probably no.

Gareth was (as I said above) born and Bred in Bradford. He went to school there. He grew up there. Some of my cousin’s friends even go to school with the singing sensation.

He has one problem though. His, now famous, Stammer. All through his life he has been beaten up by bullies because of it. And the bad part about his stammer is he only does it when he is nervous. If you have ever been bullied you will know how you spend your days in fear and suspense about what they are going to do to you. That would make his stammer even worse.

Gareth wasn't even going to try out. The only reason he went for Pop Idol was because his sister did. She didn't even get past the first round. Gareth did. And GG's two little sisters STILL think that their sister is better than Gareth.

One reason why Gareth got through was because of his stammer. That may only be my point of view, but it will of won him a lot of votes from all those people who thought 'Oh. Poor Gareth'. I know that it is not his fault and it has come from years of bullying but that’s the way it is. It is like with Fat Rick, the pop idol dropout. The only reason he got through was, apart from his average singing voice, was his weight. Be honest. Would you of even looked twice at him if he hadn't have been so fat?

Any way Gareth sung like an angel in the 50 people they had narrowed it down to and won a place in the final 10.

This is where he wrote himself in Bradford's His
tory books forever.

Week after week Gareth put in top-notch performances to steer clear of being knocked out of pop idol. During the last few weeks Gareth started to build up quite a friendship with a girl called Zoë Burkett, another pop idol final 10er.

Just as the friendship had started to look promising and entertaining it was stopped dead. Zoë was voted off Pop Idol in the Final Four. When they announced she had lost, She and Gareth both cried their eyes out, showing their bond. In fact, Gareth probably cried more than Zoë.

The final 3 was made up of boys. Gareth Gates, Will Young and Darius Danesh.

Will Young, who was the winner in the end, has a jazzier voice and could slip into Frank Sinatra's era seamlessly.

Darius Danesh was voted off to be placed 3rd in pop idol. He has a slightly deeper voice that is suited to Tom Jones songs.

Gareth was the Westlife singer of the three and his most popular performance was probably Westlife's ‘Flying Without Wings'. Coincidentally, If Gareth would of Won Pop Idol He would have been singing a Westlife song for His first single. The song is called 'Evergreen' and is off Westlifes 'World Of Our Own' album.

Unfortunately Gareth Didn't win the final. Will Young, a 23 year old Student did, and he took the recording Contracted and the Westlife first single. When Ant and Dec told the viewers of ITV on Saturday 9th of February 2002 that Will Young had won the competition by 1/2 a million votes, the whole of Bradford cried together. Well, not everyone obviously, but all the teenage girls who have walls covered with Gareth Gates poster who couldn't get through on the phone line to vote for Gareth Gates cried.

That was a big controversy with pop Idol. The amount of people who couldn't get through to vote for Gareth Gates. My Mum and me tried all night to get through but failed. So did millions of others. Will Young fa
ns said the same but we phone the will young hot line and got through first time.

Any way it is all over now and Gareth has gotten his own recording contract with Simon Cowelll, pop Idols answer the Nasty Nigel. Mr. Cowell has also signed Darius Danesh up and given him a recording contract.

Life looks peachy now for the stuttering-Superstar, don’t cha think?

The acid test for any of these 'Pop Tarts' will be if they are still around in 6 months let alone 12 mths.

I wonder if it will be "Whatever happened to that Gareth wotsisname? " a year from now - or then again, he could be the next Rick Astley...mmm bad example - make that, Gary Barlow...mmmm yes wrong again.
