I did predict that Gareth Gates would win and I was a touch shocked when he didn’t win. The judges in particular loved him and he seemed the ideal Pop Idol, good looks and a good singer. But, like many things in life it wasn’t meant to be. However, despite coming second he’s was offered a contract by Simon Cowell and on 18th March is set to release his debut single. Gareth Gates was the second youngest at seventeen, he came from Bradford and won comprehensively in his way to the final in the group stages with over 60% of the votes when he sang ‘Flying without Wings’. He sang it so well and it really made anyone watching, even if you didn’t like Westlife sit up and listen. He was good that night and the voting proved it. He was clear favourite going into the final. But, Will Young had other intentions. We all know that Gareth has problems speaking and during the run in to the final there were questions in the tabloid as to whether it was fake or not to get publicity. Personally, I thought the suggestion was cruel, his singing and talent was even more marvellous considering the problem he had. And for that I think Gareth needs to be applauded. Even though he didn’t win Pop Idol I can see him being successful, many people voted for him and many young girls will go and buy his singles. He has the ‘looks’ to send any young girl crazy (not me though) and already I have seen several posters of Gareth on the bedroom walls. With his good manners and his gentleman conduct, Gareth will be a success. He seems a very level headed young man and I am sure he will stay on the right track and work hard. In other words I don’t think he will be affected by the fame thing. I have heard people say that he can only sing a limited amount of songs, most of which will be boy band material but I disagree. I thought he was the best singer when the judges chose the Abba theme and
I thought he did well when he sang Bryan Adams song ‘Everything I do I do it for you’. He also sang ‘Yesterday’ really well. But, I do think that Gareth will appeal to young girls and a boy band image might suit him because let’s face it, sing well and look good is a sure recipe for success? Or is it? The stuttering could be a problem especially in interviews and promotions for his songs. He could have some embarrassing moments, especially on live radio or Television. But, it could work for him who knows? I do think that Gareth will find it tough when he releases his single which is a cover of ‘Unchained Melody’ it’s on the same day as George Michael releases his which could be a problem. But, with 1.2 million singles already sold of Will Young’s single in advance I do expect Gareth to get quite a few sales himself. The key will be good promotion- get the minds fresh again and everyone out buying the single.

- 27/02/02 I think you're the first person that has acknowledged that the stuttering could be a problem... I think he has done VERY well so far but it is clear to see that pree conferences and the like really fluster him... |

- 26/02/02 Sorry, had to give you a Useful because it all has been said before. Going to stop reading ops on Pop Idol unless anyone can come up with an original op on the show or its contestants. |

- 26/02/02 Agreed. I believe Gareth was much more of a "pop idol" than Will, who is just a good singer with a cheshire cat grin. Like this :>) |
