Advantages: Modern pop voice, looks

Disadvantages: Not best voice of all time

Gareth Gates is assured of massive sales for at least the next year although what happens after this initial period is totally down to the quality of his work. Having achieved fame through Pop idol as the young upstart with the stutter and modern pop voice Gareth was pipped at the post to be the official pop idol. In spite of this it may turn out to be a blessing in disguise as Gareth will not have to sell an album written months in advance, like Will Young has had to do, and he will also be given a lot more artistic freedom as there will not be as much money riding on his career to be a success as Will Young 's career had to.
There is no doubt Gareth had the second best voice after Will in the final but he is more likely to appeal with his more modern sound and appealing looks to the young fan base-the target group more likely to spend £4 on a CD.
So the winner of pop idol may have been Will but I have no doubt Gareth is the pop idol for the foreseeable future!
