Advantages: Great bloke, good voice
Disadvantages: singing the wrong stuff, single handedly ruined one of the greatest songs ever
I'm sure Gareth Gates is a great guy and a great singer and this was backed up by what i saw on Pop Idol, but i voted Will.
Why? Because Will is the true idol. His voice isn't like all these boring samey pop singers. I really think that if he expands from his 2 current songs into a different style, he'll be fantastic.
Anyway, this is about Gareth, and primarily his new single, Unchained Melody. I have always loved the Righteous Brother's version of this song and i think the fact that Gates did a cover of it is horrifying.
Gareth in my eyes is a one man pop style boy band. A teen sensation but not a true singer who'll be remembered through time for his style, as i'm sure WIll will be!
The Righteous Brothers pulled off a classic in unchained melody and it will never be beaten. WIll might be able to do it, but Gareth, NO!
In my opinion, if Unchained Melody was to be done, then Will should have had that, and Gareth Evergreen. They got it the wrong way round!
Gate's voice cannot cope with a song such as Unchained Melody, it's not powerful enough and anyone whose heard the better version will know that. People will buy Gareth's single not for the song, but for Gareth. If they were buying it for the song then they've obviously never heard the Brother's version (or Elvis's who also did it, i think).
Gareth should stick to Westlife style songs (Ironicaly this is exactly what Will's record compnay have made him do, which is stupid in my view).
Gareth, have some flair and come up with your own song, don't ruin somebody else's, i'm sure you'll be big no matter what, but at the moment it's for the wrong reason - your pop idol fame, and not your first single - sort it out Gates, you may be good, but you ain't good enought for Unchained Melody, and that's all i have to say about that.

- 07/03/02 While I liek Gareth I actually agree with some of your points about it being nowhere near as good as the original.
If you expand your ideas a bit more I'll re-rate it. Check out my opinion on Will entitled "Pop Idol - My Arse" for ideas of possible angles to take it in. |

- 07/03/02 I don't think anyone of 17 is capable of singing Unchained Melody. How can you know what it is to 'hunger for someone's touch'when you're that old? And if you can't relate to what you're singing, it's never going to be good enough. I love the origional and I agree that Gareth has totally wrecked it. Oh, and greasy 2 2 1 hair formation - sorry, but URGH! |
