Well I'm sure I'll be slated by anyone under the age of 16 on the site and inundated with a lot of not useful ratings but I just want to vent my feelings on the whole Pop Idol set. Now I'm sure wee Gareth is a lovely boy, who no doubt has had his problems overcoming his stammer and I congratulate him for that. BUT the whole Pop Idol scene has made a mockery of music. For years now the charts have been run amok with boybands, girl bands and individuals who have frankly no place in music. Pop Idol and Pop stars just highlighted how easy it is to break into the top 10 and be an overnight success. Of course the guys and girls can sing and well done to them for getting where they are, you cannot blame them for going for it, but it takes the spotlight from REAL bands who have practiced long and hard to learn to play instruments, who write their own songs, who play pubs and clubs in the hope that some A&R man will see and like them. Mr Gates won the nations heart's with his speach impediment, looks like a cute bairn and that is why he is famous. If he had a face like a smacked backside he would be now sitting in Bradford, eating his spaghetti hoops on toast and drinking his Sunny Delight like every other kid. You have to laugh when you read in the paper's that Gareth forgot the lyrics to his classic single "Unchained Melody", probably one of the greatest known songs going, and Darius needs coded stickers on his piano when he plays as he does not know how to but would like to give the impression that he does. Just another example of the misleading rubbish that the consumer will eat up. The Pop Idol show, like all the other producers of these manufactured bands were not looking for a set of youngsters who had real musical talent and could play guitar like Steve Vai, but for little cuties who would send 14 year old girls down to the local HMV to buy their single, money making was al
l there was to it. It's a shame that the likes of Gareth and Will Young have been exploited in this manner and its about time that the fans of bands who do the hard work themselves to come out of the woodwork and knock this cheesy garbage out of the charts.
