Advantages: There are none
Disadvantages: Destroys classic songs, Weak voice
Over the years there have been some terrible crimes committed in the music industry. Milli Vanilli and their fake voices, that Vanilla Ice movie Cool As Ice, that fact that boybands can now masquerade as rocking bands with crap songs and attempt to rip off the Beastie Boys. However there is now a new evil on the scene and it must be stopped before all mankind is over-run by apes......or something. The whole of idea of Popstars and Pop Idol has thrown up a great deal of entertainment. Let's face it, the only reason we watch it is to see those sad and desparate people who actually think they have natural singing ability. However when you have someone like Geri Halliwell judging you then you can't blame them. What's interesting to me is that those that have become runners up in these shows have actually came out with the best material. Liberty X actually have a bit of sass and sex appeal while Hearsay are soon to disappear into the musical abyss. Meanwhile Pop Idol has given us Darius who actually came out with a good tune and made true on his words. Idol winner Will Young has a good voice but unfortunately he's not really been given the best of material to work with so far. So far he's managed a couple of sappy ballads and a bastardisation of a Doors classic. And that's where Pop Idol runner up Gareth Gates comes in. Every time the guy comes on TV with his soppy lame ass ballands I literally feel like taking drill to my temple, the sound and pain wouldn't be half as worse. Why do I hate him so? The reasons are far too great but he basically sums up all that's wrong with music these days. Thanks to a Tv show, this guy has managed to get ahead purely by making pre-pubescent girls wet themselves. He's like the little puppy dog but what the girl's don't realise is that puppy's grow up and no doubt this is one dog that has a future engagement with The Priory Clinic. Mr Gate's may be a nice enoug
h guy but to be fair he doesn't really have a great voice. It's not bad but it's nowhere near the power that was displayed by some of his Pop Idol competitors. To use this voice and successfully ruin so far two classic songs is unthinkable but sadly it has happened. Gate's first killed Unchained Melody, a deeply soulful song and one that holds it own after decades. His version was lame and never reaches the height's of the original. If you haven't got what it takes to do something justice then don't do it at all. He then follows up with a by the numbers ballad which was so bland I don't think it can ever be matched. Now perhaps we can all forgive him for these mishaps because he was new but now Gates has simply done something that can never be forgiven. He has taken one of the great Elvis songs in Suspicious Minds and literally left it like roadkill. Not only that but he insists on taking on Elvis at his own game in the video. I'm not the only one who feel's like this but something needs to be done to stop this ever happening again. I would say that people shouldn't buy the guys records but while he's still got that crap haircut and pearly grin...it ain't gonna happen.
