We were all happy in the 1970s then within the space of one, maybe two months in 1979, maybe that changed. At about the time Margaret Thatcher became the Prime Minister in the UK, Gary Numan, then in the band Tubeway Army, stepped up to prominence in British Music with a number one hit single Are Friends Electric. The song is steeped in notions of paranoia, loneliness and isolation. Anyone who has read any Numan's biographies will see parallels with his teen years, and the lyrics will seem 'clever' in that he has pasted his own life over the writings of Philip K Dick, whose themes Gary use throughout the period before he 'retired'. Yes. Gary Numan is eclectic to a certain extent. The poor man's David Bowie fused glamorous art with sci-fi leanings and brought us the supermarket Kraftwerk at the rollover of post-punk, flattening down the ground for the nouveau romantics, with this probable one-finger keyboard stylee. But, the born Gary Webb isn't such a stormtrooper in drag after all. He's no one hit wonder, but bar his early (not ultra early) works, there's not too much to salivate over. Unless you perhaps count the recent (yes, he's still alive - numan.co.uk) output, part-inspired by artists whom he helped to inspire. But I've not heard those. If this aged ... Gary Numan - Manchester Academy - 21.2.01 Don't you find it bizarre the way celebrities are portrayed by the media. Well maybe you don't. Maybe you are the sort of person that thinks Anne Robinson is the devil itself and that Craig David is the sort of guy you'd like round for a cup of tea. So I'm here at the Academy and Gary Numan walks on stage clad in black - so right he must be a satanic industrial goth then. Well no, the truth is that he's on tour with his wife constantly by his side and his parents as joint tour managers.
