Advantages: Pioneering, Varied, Great musical talent
Disadvantages: Hyped?
...they might be- but they're too different to really compare- Damon Albarn is the only real link- one played alternative/rock/pop- and Gorillaz are definately hip-hop/lo-fi. The success of the Gorillaz is hardly surprising considering the real talent behind them. Any band that draws together the talents of artists as respected as Damon Albarn, Dan The Automator, Del Tha Funky Homosapien and Jamie Hewlett is guaranteed to be a winner. The cartoon band consists of front man 2D, guitarist Noodle, drummer Russel and founder member Murdoc on bass. These are the faces of Gorillaz, and they feature on the videos, on the album sleeves, at gigs and on their great website. It is this almost unique idea of a totally cartoon band that makes Gorillaz great fun to watch and to listen to, although, obviously it is the music that counts- and that's another strength? I bought their album ages ago, after instantly falling in love with the track- 'Clint Eastwood'. I wasn't dissapointed. The album is about as varied as it gets- and there are some great samples used on the album. The album spans from pioneering to retro. The clever thing is that they have created the new genre of 'lo-fi', and by the time they've complete the album they're already pushing the boundaries of it! Gorillaz are definately hyped, and commercial- but the musical talent behind them allows this to be forgiven. What they have created is a new sound, a new image and something that is fresh and interesting. It will be interesting to see where they are in a couple of years!

- 05/07/01 Nahh I dont think they're hyped , the cartoon image is refreshing for once compared to the crappy "clean and respectful" image of other bands Gorrilaz make caricatures of themselves on screen , fairly original methinks. |
