Disadvantages: New album is erm...'poo'

Green Day was part of the California punk scene. Childhood friends Billie Joe Armstrong (guitar, vocals) and Mike Dirnt (bass; born Mike Pritchard) formed their first band, Sweet Children, in Rodeo, California when they were 14 years old. By 1989, the group had added drummer Al Sobrante and changed their name to Green Day. That year, the band independently released their first EP, 1,000 Hours, which was well received in the punk scene. At this point in time not many people had heard of them but there success started here.

Soon, the group signed a contract with the local independent label, Lookout! Records. 39/Smooth, Green Day's first album, was released later that year. Shortly after its release, the band replaced Kiftmeyer with Tré Cool the band's permanent drummer.
He was the finishing touch to the band.

Green Day had been formed and was to be a great success.

They were a punk band (alternative music) and had many followers all over the world. They brought out brilliant albums like Kerplunk, Insomniac and Dookie. It was these albums that made them famous, and the world liked this type of music.

DOOKIE
-------

Dookie was possibly the best album brought out by Green Day. It was produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day in 1994. It was one of the biggest selling punk albums in the last century. 'She', my favourite Green Day song is on this album. It is the best song that Green Day ever wrote in my opinion as it is really catchy, has a great bass, and is really well sung by Billie Joe. What also makes it my favourite song is the fact that I can play it on the guitar. The chords are really easy and the words are great and fairly easy to remember. There are other great songs on the album such as Basket Case and Welcome to Paradise. All the words are great and the style of music is the best I have ever heard. Once you have listened to this album you can understand why it is so popular and so higly ra
ted by most people.

Song Titles:

Burnout
Having A Blast
Chump
Long View
Welcome To Paradise
Pulling Teeth
Basket Case
She
Sassafras Roots
When I Come Around
Coming Clean
Emenius Sleepus
In The End
F.O.D.
All By Myself (Secret Track)

KERPLUNK
---------

Kerplunk was another great album by Green Day. It was released in 1991 and produced by Andy Ernst and Green Day. It was recorded in the Art of Ears Studio in San Francisco.
The album has a number of good songs on such as 2000 light years away and and One of my lies. The style of this album is very similar to Dookie but the songs are all very different.

Song Titles:

2,000 Light Years Away
One For The Razorbacks
Welcome To Paradise
Christie Road
Private Ale
Dominated Love Slave
One Of My Lies
80
Android
No One Knows
Who Wrote Holden Cauldfield?
Words I Might Have Ate
Sweet Children
Best Thing In Town
Strangeland
My Generation*

INSOMNIAC
----------

This album was produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day in 1995. It was a big success but never sold as many copies as Dookie. I only just bought this album, as I never thought that it was any good. I downloaded a few songs fron Napter and thought that they were quite good, so I decided that I would buy the album after all. It is nothing compared to Dookie but does have some good songs on it such as 86 and Walking Contradiction.

Song Titles:

Armatage Shanks
Brat
Stuck With Me
Geek Stink Breath
No Pride
Bab's Uvula Who?
86
Panic Song
Stuart and the Ave.
Brain Stew
Jaded
Westbound Sign
Walking Contradiction

There is a lot of merchandise that is available around the world. There are lots of t-shirts, hoodies, bags, hats
and many other things. www.interpunk.com is a very good place to get these items from and I strongly recommend it.

Another good store is www.GreenDayStore.com.

After the new album Warning was brought out, critics have been saying a lot of stuff about Green Day.
Green Day surprised their fans when they brought out Warning. It was a completely different style of music to what they usually do. Normally their songs are quick, with lots of bass and drum, but these were more 'tuneful' and meaningful.

It was produced by Rob Cavallo and Green Day and was recorded in Studio 880, Oakland; CA. Warning was released on December 19th 2000.

Song Titles:

Warning
Blood, Sex and Booze
Church On Sunday
Fashion Victim
Castaway
Misery
Deadbeat Holiday
Hold On
Jackass
Waiting
Minority
Macy's Day Parade
86 (Live in Prague)

Some fans liked these songs more but others were shocked that the band they had followed for years could change like this and bring out such a pathetic album.

The album in a punk magazine called Kerrang! was not rated very highly and critics say that Green Day are no longer punk. Being a Green Day fan myself I have to agree with this. They are becoming more like some kind of rock boy band.

I went out and brought their Warning album pretty much as soon as it had come out expecting it to be really good. To say that I was shocked would be an understatement.

I was really unhappy. Green Day were the band that got me started listening to punk music and to listen to them now singing songs like Minority and Deadbeat Holiday made me want to just take the album back.
Since then I have listened to the album about five times. It doesn't get any better with time either. The dust is now piling on it on the bottom of my cd rack.

Just to complicate matters more Green Day have been accused
of plagiarism by an obscure British band called The Other Garden.
The allegations suggest that there are many similarities between Green Day's recent single Warning and a track called Never got the chance, which was released by The Other garden back in 1997.

After listening to both of the songs I have to say that Green Day have nothing to worry about at all, as the songs have about two guitar chords that are the same in it and the words are completely different.

Green Day do a lot of tours all over the world. Last year they came to the UK and went to such places as Manchester, Nottingham, and London. They are currently touring Japan. They have fans worldwide and this has led to a big part of their success.

Green Day's next album is going to have to be really good. It needs to be a bit more punk then the last one or else they will lose a lot of their fans. Me being one of them.

They seemed to have gained quite a lot of fans with the release of their new album because it is what I would call everyday normal music. It is the kind of music that you would hear on radio four. But before the Green Day music was different and not everybody would like it and that is what made it so popular then.

Billie Joe
----------

Billie Joe, the bands singers also plays the guitar in every song. He was born on February 17th 1972. He is married with two children Jacob and Joseph.

Billie was the youngest of six children in a working class family in California. As a young boy Billie would sing at local hospitals to cheer the patients up which was an early sign of his talent and of his love for music and entertaining. Billie wrote his first song when he was 14, and has never stopped writing since.

Mike Dirnt
-----------

Mike is the bass player and backing vocals in the band and was born on May 4th 1972. He has a fiancée called Sarah and a daughter called Estelle. Mike's mum wa
s a heroin addict and he was put up for adoption. His adoptive parents divorced when he was seven and he had to divide his time between the two different households. He met Billie Joe in the fifth grade and worked for Billie's mum. At the age of fifteen Mike rented a room on the side of Billie's house. The band was soon formed.

Tre Cool
---------

Tre plays the drums in the band and was born on December 9th 1972. He is married to Claudia and has a daughter called Ramona. He can also play the accordion and guitar. Tre grew up in Willits, California with his father. His dad built many of the houses in the area and built one for the owner of a big record company who lived close by.
Tre was in a band called the Lookouts, when Al Sobrante left Green Day. Soon after Tre joined Greenday and the band was formed.

Green Day are meant to be bringing out a new single soon. It is meant to be really good so I am looking forwards to seeing the style of it and to see the responses from other Green Day fans.
I think that at the moment Green Day have gone a bit 'Poo' (thought it was a much cleaner word then shit), but hopefully they will get themselves together!!!

ps. The official Green Day quote of the week is.......

"who knows how to play the f**king guitar? where's Dave Grohl? does he know how to play guitar? NO he's a drummer!"

Billie Joe live.

I'm a new Green Day fan, I like their new style. I really like Macy's Day Parade but I also like You Lied and Back Against the Wall. I think they are only showing how diversified their abilities are. Good op.
