Advantages: You can go raving to this one
Disadvantages: A bit much if you have a headache
Hard house is today's hardcore. It is so brilliant I cannot describe. When I go out clubbing, I want to be able to let loose and throw myself all over the place, how can one do this to the likes of garage? or RnB? err, I don't think so. (I know this sounds a bit extreme) It is hard to describe what exactly is Hard house. Well, here are the ingredients; A loud heavy bassline, da da da da in time to the music, normally 4/4 beat. Then their will be some noises, which are often described as hoovers and horns but sound more like sounds from a synth not a real hoover! What makes hard house different is that it is very fast and bouncy but not at all repetitive like Techno can be. There are lots of catchy little tunes played over the bass lines and it just puts a smile on everyone's face! There are a lot of tunes with vocals as well. For example, Cortina - Music is moving. I don't think there is any real reason to hate hard house unless you don't like hard music. I agree that some people prefer the soft flowy stuff. No but seriously, I never used to listen to this sort of music, I loved garage but I'm the sort of person that comes to appreciate music the more I listen to it. For instance, I learnt to appreciate Classical music in school, because we always had to listen to it! If you don't listen to Hard house, then all you hear is some heavy bassline banging in your ears and a lot of noise. This is what I used to think about the matter, but now I hear the different tunes, the levels of music and the buildups and PHATT bass lines which can sound so amazing in a club. I don't judge music until I've listened to it, it's all good, but I love my Hard House!!!!!!

- 06/07/01 Addressing each point. Firstly, to listen to 'hard' music when you go out is not the only way to be let loose and to throw yourself about. It is all about your own state of mind and how the music affects you. It could be argued that this is the fundamental reason why people have different tastes in music. When you say garage I assume you're refering to UK Garage/2 step which is completely different to the original garage from the US which with it's soulful vocals and beat often with a 70s funk guitar part in the background can stir up just as much emotion. I fear you to be living a myth that hard house is the only type of music to get a crowd going. This is most definintley not the case. You only have to go to a club such as Basics in Leeds and you'll see a much greater spirit with everyone getting into the funky/deep house that is being played. This type of house is so much better, not least because the arrangements of the beats and melodies used are much more well thought out and the build ups are more than the typical drum roll often found in hard house. The type of beat used in other forms of house are usually much more funky and make you wanna move that booty. The main problem with hard house is that it is for the uneducated clubber. By saying that techno is repetitive demonstrates this. Techno is meant to be hard, raw music with often heavily based percussion and beats. With hard house and trance it is just a softened up version which defeats the whole purpose of Techno which to a certain degree is like "the punk of dance music" (Dave Clarke) and is not meant to be fun but to be hard and strip you and the music to the core. Other forms of house have more energy than hard house and do not involve the cheese element.
So to conclude. It is clear that as a musical genre, hard house is clearly the pop music of dance along with trance and the people who go to hard house clubs often demonstrate this with they behave. You don't have to be a)immature or b)be a yob to show that you're having a good time. A huge smile and groove away with your arms in the air will do fine! |
