Advantages: talented group, great song, look great, sing live, and NOEL!!!
Disadvantages: facing lots of pressure to be as good as the hype
I began watching Popstars because I enjoy these kinds of programmes, but it really is quite a different concept. I have already written an opinion on the TV programme, so I won't repeat it all here. Suffice to say, the programme is addictive and compelling. Soon the final five were chosen, the group was formed and I was hooked. The final band consists of three women and two men :- SUZANNE SHAW – small, blonde, impish looking and the youngest at nineteen. Former Agnetha in an Abba tribute band, she is going out with one of the men from that group. The tabloids had a field day when they discovered he was an almost pensionable 35! Suzanne has everything going for her really – great looking, perfect figure and a wonderful singing voice. Okay, I’ll give up and go home now. <Grin> MYLENE KLASS – taller and chunkier than Suzanne, but still perfectly formed, Mylene is probably the most musical of the five, as she plays three instruments as well as having an impressive singing voice. With her brown eyes, long dark hair and oriental looks, she will be popular amongst the male fans, I’m sure. I wasn’t so keen on her initially, believing her to be rather arrogant, but I’m warming to her. So she can stay. <Grin> KYM MARSH – The oldest at twenty-four, and the only parent (as far as we know!). Single mum Kym has a young son called David and a little daughter called Emily. Because of this and her outspoken, blunt personality, she is the bookies’ favourite to be the first to leave the band, but let’s hope she doesn’t. In my opinion, her voice is the strongest of all and the camera loves her, just watch the video of Pure and Simple! DANNY FOSTER – Cheeky little Danny, looks like a thug, but with a smile to melt the hardest hearts and a voice to make your spine tingle. Down-to-earth Londoner, who seems very shy, modest and unassuming. He looks out of place in
the band really, but his talent is plain for all to see. This guy got in on his merits and thoroughly deserves his place in the most talked about pop group of the year. NOEL SULLIVAN – Phwaw!! Oops, sorry, but let’s face it, this guy is gorgeous. Sultry brown eyes, dark eyebrows, a lilting Welsh accent, tall, that smile, that voice… <sigh> He is also sensitive, he has cried several times on TV and he loves his mum, ahhh. He also has a great sense of humour too, which most women find incredibly attractive. He got the biggest cheer on CD:UK today too, so it’s obviously not just me who thinks he’s hornier than a stegosaurus! So, they look good, they sound good and they work really well together too. As for the band name, many people have commented that Popstars would be a better name for them, as they were already called that by the public who watched the programme. But as Danny explained on The Priory last week, Popstars is a trademark, it is the name used by the television programme and in several countries, not just the UK. He said they decided on Hear’say because of all the gossip and speculation surrounding them and the name they would choose. So when you think of it, it’s a clever idea and it has grown on me! Their first single, Pure and Simple, is out next Monday (March 12th) and I plan to go to the shops then to buy it. I can’t remember ever being bothered about buying a single on the first day it comes out, but this is something special. This feels like it’s a bunch of my friends out there, who have a real chance at the number one spot in the charts. I know it’s not, but that’s reality TV for you. We have seen the group from the very beginning and have followed them through each stage of the selection process. They have become a slick, polished band, but still retain a fresh honesty about them thus far in their career. In a world of plastic pop and painted
grins on blonde boys, it makes a refreshing change. Pure and Simple is excellent, very catchy with good scope to show off the performers’ individual voices, and how well they sound together. It doesn’t sound like a Steps song either. I was hoping for something good, but this song is even better than I had hoped for. The video is wonderful too, especially Noel in that purple shirt! Popstars followed the making of it in last week’s programme, which was very interesting to see. This week, the finished product has been shown on MTV every day and looks very flashy. The group look so right in it, it isn’t too over-the-top to detract from the song, but it looks like they spent a few quid on it! The Popstars book is out now and available to order at Amazon for £6.39 plus postage. The album is out on March 24th and the video on March 19th (£11.99 from Amazon). I know this, because I have a list in front of the computer and hope to buy all of these as soon as I get the cash. Pure and Simple deserves to be a number one single, I really hope it is. Whatever you say about Hear’say, they have proved they can sing live, over and over. Look at how well they coped with performing at the Brits, despite some booing from the music industry! It takes guts to get up there and prove themselves, but they did it brilliantly. They have talent, they have that special something, the “it” factor which ‘Nasty’ Nigel, Nicki and Paul noticed throughout the audition process. Now I hope they continue to go from strength to strength.
