I suppose that the good thing about hearsay and popstars is that they don't pretend to be anything more than a manufactured pop band, and theoretically this should make the more shallower pop fans realise that this kind of music isn't really music. Unfortunately (well I say that, but I don't really care), the show has made them much more famous than they'd have been if they hadn't been televised. The truth is, their 'music' is no more interesting than ... well, anything. Popstars isn’t about music, it represents everything that is wrong with the charts at the moment. It’s evident that they don’t give a %*&^ about the music, but they are held up as idols. People claimed that they were wonderful – even before they had even heard their ‘single’. How can five narcisstic Muppets, who spend 10 times as long on their hair as they do actually rehearsing, be thought of as better and more worthy of a number one single than talented, creative bands who have spent years trying to get even slight recognition? ‘Oooh, we’re trying to write a song of their own’ they say, as if that is something amazing and innovative (well, for a pop band it could be argued), then they say that they don’t want to use any clichés (well, I suppose you’ve used all the ones that exist in than single). I’m not saying that they should become a proper band, because they clearly don’t want to, I’m just annoyed that even though people know that they’re a bubble gum band everything is mad for them – in effect they’re getting rewarded for what they haven’t done.
