Advantages: Goodlooking, all-singing, all-dancing, aided greatly by pre-prepared public interest.
Disadvantages: In the fickle, dog-eat-dog world of pop, how long can they last?
Similar to the undoubted phenomonen of 2000, "Big Brother", most of the UK's television audience, at one time or another, tuned into ITV's "Popstars". Plugged for months prior to the opening programme, with obscure trailers simply stating "Nigel, Pick Me!", hype soon started to surround the so-called new genre of a "docu-pop". Word began to spread across different forms of media and sure enough, the programme was soon attracting millions of regular viewers, watching thousands of young hopefuls being put their paces in their bid to become a chart sensation. Weeks passed and the thousands were all-too-quickly whittled down, and by-passing the so-called failures, or "Dropstars" such as egotistical Darius and public favourite Claire, five lucky, but equally talented fresh faces were plucked from obscurity and transformed into a national sensation virtually overnight. The five; Noel Sullivan (the shy heart-throb of the group), Suzanne Shaw (cute blonde one), Myleene Klass (annoying one), Kym Marsh (also cute, "leader" of the band) and Danny Foster (smiley Londoner) were instantly hot property. Holed up inside a lavish secret home until the final decisions were broadcast on national television, the band were UK megastars before they had even released a single. Jetting off to Norway to work with respected producers such as Stargate, arguably the most-manufactured group of them all returned to British with new-found fame, confidence and more importantly, material for their first album. The five were then officially unveiled to the notorious UK press and paparazzi, where they had to endure multiple press conferences in front of people trained to catch these rookie sensations out. It didn't work and the band came through unscathed, even performing live on several occasions. However, as with everything, negative press coverage was never far off. For weeks of unsuccessful
guessing at the group's final line-up, the national tabloids felt it was time to get their own back and launched stories of all five members' past lives, including ex-love interests and friend speaking out on the new celebrities. And so the somewhat exaggerated "truth" began to filter out - Myleene had been two-timed by her model boyfriend, Suzanne was dating a man almost twice her age, Danny and Noel's early careers were exposed and most famously, unofficial group leader Kym was revealed as not only being engaged, but also as the mother of two young children. But the band surprised a lot of people by keeping their heads held high and to a degree, ignoring the paper talk. Within weeks under the public spotlight, they have noticeably matured and improved, and because of the time spent living together have also bonded well as a team unit. So it was to no surprise when the highly-anticipated debut single "Pure And Simple" was released on March 12th and was an absolute sensation. However, nobody could predict just how big the song was to be. Breaking records by selling over half a million in just one week, the group now known as Hear'Say (in response to press stories about them), stormed to the number one spot over the likes of big singles from both Westlife and Shaggy. Seemingly keeping with the notion of striking when the iron is hot, Hear'Say debut album, appropriately titled "Popstars" was released at a virtual boiling point. And even though I am not a great fan of pop music myself, with the likes of Hear'Say and the Sugababes infiltrating our charts, perhaps things ARE finally looking up. Not since the Spice Girls has the country witnessed such a pop sensation and there is no doubt that Hear'Say have the talent to be around for a long time. The question of whether they will or not though, has yet to be answered.
