Advantages: The downfall of Cast
Disadvantages: you think?
Prefab, bland, and as much sex appeal as the dumb one from Westlife (which one, you ask..). The verdict on Hear'Say was obvious from the start so why the hell did people make it the best selling album of all times or whatever other nonsense it was. Who cares, you say, pop is supposed to be fun, not a U2 tour with a giant lemon. Fair enough, I say, but what is the need for this "fun." This existential question is one that merits examination. On the plus side, the more Hear'Say albums sold, the less people will encourage Toploader or Cast to keep going. At least Hear'Say wear makeup and don't have to play "real" songs. Hear'Say don't have any influences so interviews are much shorter; who gives a flying f**k that Bobby Gillespie liked Can when we were all listening to the Simple Minds. But at least, he's not common. You can't audition genius (give me feedback on this one, I love arguments). It doesn't stop there. They look like the stockists at Tescos (except for the hot one who's obviously in the wrong band) so there is less chance of celebrity stalkings. That goes for celebrity mates, Kym's got Jack Ryder and I've got a TV dinner so what need is there to take the little wa*ker home when you can have him on the telly. There is no real need for this fun, is there? That's precisely the reason to boycott their records (in a Christian extremist kind of way). Popstars (in the noble sense) are like Ziggy Stardust, they're supposed to be otherwordly. Danny's not my idol, he's my mailman. Our boring lives are being repackaged with Noel's ugly mug on the cover and we're buying it, like sheep. Pop music is escape, not a bloody Boots club card and Ross Geller's haircut.

tim_russell - 13/08/01 This is one of the most intelligent, well-written ops I've read on this site. Good stuff. Some people are clearly afraid of upsetting others with their ops, you aren't and good for you! |
