Disadvantages: Do you want a list?

Anyone who watched the last Patrick Kielty show of the series will know how far some people will go to be famous. Setting up auditions for a band called 'MimeStars', people were encouraged to come along with a hairbrush and mime to their favourite song. Needless to say, the results were far more enjoyable than those of the Popstsars programme.

I frankly don't care what their songs are like (but I'll get to them in a minute), I just disagree with such an obviously manufactured band on moral grounds. I know that most 'pop' bands now are churned out and handed some lyrics before they go on stage, but to be so blantant about it is frankly nauseating.

Fortnuately, I never watched the Popstars show. I've never bought a Popstars - sorry - HearSay CD. Some may say that doesn't qualify me to judge them. But I say: 'Have you heard them sing?'

Their first song, Pure and Simple, was a blatant rip off of to very successful songs. The verse tune was lifted entirely from the All Saints song 'Never Ever', and the chorus was simply the tune from Oasis' 'Around the World'. Listen to it, trust me, and you'll hear it.

Bands work hard to get together, get enough money for instruments, and struggle to get a record deal. The fact that anyone can walk into an audtion to 'be a popstar', is just ludicrous. What's next? FootballStars?
They're all pretty ugly too, just to throw that one in. Sorry if anyone disagrees.

I recently heard them singing on that Saturday night programme they've got (they've got a Saturday night programme! Has the world gone mad?), and not one of them was in tune! Were they chosen for their singing talents, or were they just the best of a bad bunch?

Mimestars represented how far today's society would go to be famous. But there is a serious side, too. Many school children have been swindelled out of money by compa
nys claiming to make them 'popstars', and surprise, surprise, it was all a fake. People are told by programmes like 'Popstars' that they have to be famous - whatever the cost.

HearSay, Gone Tomorrow...
