Advantages: More For Your Money?
Disadvantages: Or Just a Cheap Gimmick?
Hidden Tracks [Background: The CD format has brought about the resurgence of the hidden track, a gimmick that originated on certain vinyl LPs as early as the 1960s] You know the situation. You arrive home after a visit to the local record shop, or the latest CD album release that you've ordered from Amazon is waiting on your doormat when you get home. You carefully place the CD in your hi-fi and listen intently to each track in turn, from the singles, through the obligatory ballads and obvious fillers, right through to the last track on the album . . . . . . . . . . or so you think! But what's this? You've listened to all 12 tracks and there's still 25 minutes left to go. You actually forget about it and start to do something else only to be startled nearly half an hour later when the hidden track at the very end of the CD booms out at you, making you fall off your chair. There are now numerous CDs that have a hidden track at the end. I already knew of several in my collection, on albums by artists such as Robbie Williams, World Party and the Pet Shop Boys. However, if you need a more comprehensive examination of the phenomenon of the hidden track, then there is a good website out there at: http://www.mwmw.com/pathetic/hidden.html This site catalogues all known hidden tracks, from recent CDs to some of the earlier efforts on vinyl LPs (including several by the Beatles). Hidden tracks are rated as anything from "Worthless", through "OK" to "Totally Cool". The detailed descriptions also tell you how long you will have to wait to listen to particular hidden tracks (from a few seconds through to half an hour), and also describe the music that you will hear. I had not realised just how many artists had used this gimmick, but there are literally hundreds out there. You can even send in details of other hidden tracks that have not been sp
otted by the site's webmaster and they will add these to their already comprehensive database. Quite why anyone ever came to devote a website to this subject is questionable, but the fact is that it exists, and in its own way it provides some very useful information on this particular subject. So go and check out this website and see if you own any hidden tracks that you had failed to notice from the CDs in your collection. {An original Dooyoo opinion © Blackjane 2000}
