Advantages: Occasionally hidden rare gems are hidden on CD's which are only to be found accidentally or by word-of-mouth, usually by the dedicated fan, and gives them a surprise

Disadvantages: Most hidden tracks are just pointless jokes created for the purpose of filling empty CD space, it's annoying to have to get to the track too if you like the hidden track; why can't they just not hide it?

Ever since Nirvana popularised the 'hidden track' in the early 90's on a few of their albums, a whole barrage of bands have cottoned on to this novelty and done the same.
Needless to say, this is just a 'novelty', nothing much more than a joke. If artists are going to add on an extra track, they mightn't bother with laboriously placing a track within a hidden space of quiet, they should just slap it on fair and simple. It's a pain sometimes having to find the track, and quite a few of these are just pointless. It's just a joke, the band/artist were bored and in a bout of goofiness, stuck on some uneeded noise at the end which people have to search either to find a rare gem which they have to laboriously access everytime or a pointless joke which then you if you don't like, can conveniently eject the CD before your senses are disturbed. I don't mind bonus tracks, but please don't hide them, it's irritating and it's not very clever (though saying that, on a few albums I own, it's okay). I also agree with JCMilner's opinion that there's a number of bands who do this simply because they either aren't satisfied with their album musically or length-wise, and want to slap on an extra to fill up excess CD space. *sigh*
