Angst - Rock. Hmm. It's a phrase which brings to mind teenage boys, sitting in their bedrooms, strumming a guitar and howling 'meaningfully' inbetween frequent wanking sessions. JJ72 took my mental picture, ripped it up, spat on it, and stamped on it a number of times, just to make sure it really was dead. I first heard JJ72 on MTV:2 a while back, with Long Way South, and they completely blew me away. They sarrt their strumming, and you think ' Ahh, another guitar band hoping for fame after the commercial success of Travis' - (or similar)- and then Mark Greanery opens his mouth. It's the type of voice, which, like Thom Yorke's ... Read the complete review

Well I dont know about anyone else, but for me, this one of the most eagerly awaited debut albums since Mansuns essential "Attack of the Grey Lantern". This eponymous release comes on the back of hectic touring in the last year, as well as three successful singles: Long Way South, Snow and Oxygen. The latter enjoying some serious airplay and a Top of the Pops appearance for the Dublin band. Fronted by the excellent Mark Greaney, the energy of the three piece that is JJ72, comes from the youthful exuberance of the three members. Mark, for example is merely 17 years of age, and has only recently finished his schooling. He is backed up by Hilary Woods on ... Read the complete review

Now, this is what a real band should sound like. After hearing the tremendous “October Swimmer” on an NME sampler CD about a year ago, I was hooked. They sounded so refreshing, so different, uplifting almost. It’s so melodic, yet there is so much passion wrapped up in it. Angry yet melodic, beautiful and intense, all at once, this band have a huge, huge future ahead of them. Every single song of theirs is something you want to listen to forever. Buy something by them and you certainly won't forget it. Beautiful, stunning, magnificent. Wow. I am sometimes lost for words to describe them. They have written some of the best songs I have heard ... Read the complete review

I LOVE JJ72! (but the name is a secret.....) I heard the beautiful single Oxygen on Xfm twice before I decided that I had to buy the album. Mark Greaney has the voice of an angel (or alternatively the voice of Brian Molko, but hey, who's complaining?) and Hillary has perfected that sexy britpop girl bass player I'm-too-cool-to-look-up stance. I sent my best friend along to the siging at the Virgin megastore when JJ72 was released (I was on holiday!) with strict instructions to do whatever she had to (beg, borrow or bite) to get me a signed copy. It was worth it, if only to hear from shocked JJ72 fans how my mate had barged up to Hillary and ... Read the complete review

Out of all the new groups in the last twelve months, JJ72 have had very little media attention. Again the comparisons are made to Radiohead but, just as Muse and Coldplay are, JJ72 are simply another group playing a similar style of music; they are not ripping off Radiohead's work. Again, like Muse and Coldplay, the main focus of this group is the heavy bass and, more importantly, a strong, soaring vocalist - in this case Mark Greaney. For the music this group plays his voice is perfect and the irish tones enable him to reach both incredibly high, soaring chorus' and soft, tender verses. Their debut album is superb and if they carry on in a ... Read the complete review
