Joe Cocker was a stringy-haired bag of gubbins who became famous for ruining a Beatles song (that even Ringo couldn't entirely ruin in the first place) at the Woodstock festival. His gimmick was whirling his arms round really fast when he sang, and sweating a lot, like that's supposed to be sexy or athletic or indicative of passion or something other than just being a shrieking buffoon and showing off. He did some gravel-voiced soundtrack tunes many years later after he sobered up and everyone has to say 'he's from Sheffield you know' and also he was a gas-pipe fitter, like that in some way excuses him from being useless. Joe Cocker was born in 1944 in Sheffield, he was an English Rhythm and Blues vocal stylist, with jerky movements which brought him notoriety during the late sixties and early seventies. His biggest success was in 1969 when he appeared at The Woodstock Music And Arty Fair and his 1970 tour Mad Dogs And Englishmen. He recorded a slow version of Lennon and McCartney's With A Little Help From My Friends, this became a top British hit in 1969, he later re-grouped with The Greaseband and did an American tour he went on to have minor hits with Delta Lady and She Came In Through The Bathroom Window.
