Advantages: Produced some of the greatest British guitar bands and artists of all time

Disadvantages: His style is very recognisable, and at times can appear very predictable

(John) Lennon, Verve, Radiohead, Muse - Know these artists/bands? If you do, chances are you're familiar with the production work of John Leckie.
The first John Leckie produced album I bought was Radiohead's 'The Bends', and though the main strength of the album is the band's songwriting, I love the way that John Leckie produces the shimmery wavey guitar sounds on the album on the mellow songs, and other albums. And the drum sounds are very warm and crisp, but don't have a very spiteful over-rocky bite, and his vocal treatments are amazing. Listen to the hypnotics of Richard Ashcroft on the psychedelic-pre-indie (The) Verve album 'A Storm In Heaven'. Leckie's production really accompanied Verve guitarist Nick McCabe's already shimmery soundscape guitar-work, and he pretty much produced the best album in the Verve catalogue as a whole. It has longevity, and it's not Oasis styled (really)!
I'm not familiar with Leckie's work with John Lennon, but without a doubt, his competent skills must have boosted Lennon on record. Muse however sound like Radiohead...And er, I guess John Leckie could only carbon copy produce them then? =) I'm not aware of how many bands Leckie's produced, but all I do know is that all Leckie-produced songs I've heard are ace. He picks good bands to work with!
Basically, John Leckie's worked with a lot of really influential British guitar bands. Obviously it's not down to a producer to create a great record entirely, but if Leckie's at the production helm, you can atleast guarantee that a record with crap songs will atleast have great production. John Leckie really is a great assett to the British music industry, he should be knighted! His production techique is intelligent, he produces moods matching exactly the moods of the song, without trying to be fancy and showing off. This man must be knighted!!!

I have several 80s and early 90s albums produced by John Leckie and I have to agree with your comments. Decent British producers are rare and John is one of the best.
