Advantages: brilliant music, mad band, cheap
Disadvantages: none!
I have been a King Prawn fan for a few years now, and after narrowly missing them when they played in Milton Keynes a year ago, I vowed to see them when they came again. The days leading up to the Friday were torturous - I had wanted to see them for ages, and despite the fact that they aren't a massive band, they are one of my favourite and I spent days listening to their album 'Surrender to the Blender' in anticipation. It was also good in that it was my 11 year old cousin's first proper rock gig, and what a way for him to be initiated into the world of rock! The supports were Whitmore, a ska punk band, with less of a reggae multicultural sound to them than King Prawn. They were pretty good, but in my excitement I didn't notice them all that much. They played a mixture of songs from all their albums,I didn't recognise them all, but that was what made it even better. The highlight song for me was a kind of ode to pot in which the main chorus centered on 'I wanna smoke some s**t' whilst everyone passed their spliffs around. The thing that first got me into King Prawn is that they are a very colourful mad band. The star of the show is not just Al Rumjen, the singer, but Baba Luck, the nutty bassist. If you see him you will know what I mean - a short man with a huge Osama beard and a jelibiah. On stage he speaks in a kind of patois-Jamaican accent, but when we met him after the show he had the perfect English school boy accent. I also met Al after the show, and even though he agreed to pose for photos, and sign our posters, he seemed a bit preoccupied, as though he'd rather be some where else, and I thought this was a bit rude. However, mingling with fans is a lot more than some bands who have come to Milton Keynes do. They had a fair bit of merchandise at the back of the hall, most just with the legend 'King Prawn' in a sporty logo on them. I bought a funky navy blue King Prawn h
at which I wear all the time. They also sold Whitmore CDs, but I don't think they were selling King Prawn's stuff. Overall, it was a brilliant night out - if you are a fan of King Prawn, then you will probably want to see them anyway, and if not - you should be, if you don't like you music too sensible!!!

- 25/03/02 I've never heard of them either! But they sound fun.
(Mucho apologies for not rating, I tried four times but got that intensely irritating Bad Gateway thing. Sorry). |
