After searching through the music category on Dooyoo, I chanced upon the songwriters section.

At present, only six opinions have been written in this category, which is probably relatively new. However, I was amazed that no-one as yet, until now that is, has written about the songwriting talents of John Lennon and Paul McCartney.

The main difference that sets these two legends apart from some of their modern day equivalents is that they were part of the most popular band of the time, and perhaps all time, but they still managed to become prolific songwriters as well.

There have been other groups who have written their own songs, but nowadays we tend to think of the most popular groups being no more than puppets at the mercy of manipulative managers, record label executives and producers.

The Beatles were a band in the true sense of the word. They played their own instruments and wrote their own songs. As well as the massive success of the Beatles as a group, and the Beatlemania phenomenon that they caused, I am a firm believer that it is their songs that shine through above anything else.

Anyone who owns any Beatles albums, and in particular the 'Red' and 'Blue' albums, will be well aware of the variety of songs penned by these two songwriters. From the sheer energy of tracks like 'She Loves You' and 'Help!', through haunting ballads such as 'Yesterday' and 'Let It Be', and also the anthemic moods of 'All You Need Is Love' and 'Hey Jude', the range and variety of their songs is immense. Many modern day artists have recorded cover versions of Beatles songs, showing the enduring appeal that they have.

After both songwriters went their separate ways during the 1970s, after the Beatles split, they continued to write great songs on their own, although Lennon's life was tragically cut short in December 1980 when he was shot by an obsessed 'fan'
, Mark Chapman.

McCartney, with Wings initially, and then later on his own, has continued to write songs. Although he is less prolific now than in the 1960s, he still manages to come up with real gems every now and again, including the fantastic 'Beautiful Night' from a couple of years ago.

For anyone who has never experienced the songwriting talents of Lennon & McCartney, then there is a plethora of CDs out there for you to experience their songs. Try searching a large music site like amazon.com or cdnow.com for the works of the Beatles, Wings or solo efforts from Lennon or McCartney in order to hear the magic of their songs for yourself.

I've never been a supporter of the view that Lennon was the only worthwhile half of the partnership. They both had invaluable contributions to make. The fact that they were both able to remain world-beating artists in their own right proves that.

Excellent opinion, keep up the good work. Couple of Beatlesy trivia thing here that may be of interest; During the recording of 'Hey June' McCartney messes up his backing vocal , rather amusingly you can hear him utter an expletive in the background at about CD counter time 2m 58s.
Mark Chapman's inspiration to shoot Lennon came from reading the book 'The Catcher In The Rye'; I havn't wrote one but there are plenty of opinions about it.
PS I don't think there's anyone out there that hasn't heard a Lennon or McCartney song.

My boss, an excellent jazz guitarist, once supported The Beatles at The Cavern!
