Advantages: EVERYTHING
Disadvantages: none
Level 42 are for me the greatest group in the entire history of the world. I may be a little bit biased but having followed them since 1983(first time I saw them) and having seen them 7 times in the last month (as far north as Liverpool and as far south as Brighton) I can only say they get better with every year. This years tour was fantastic. Loads of the "old stuff" mixed with never performed before stuff(which was as a result of a poll on the official L42 web site)hence the superb The Machine Stops. Classic.
Everyone had a great time and the band (with the very welcome return of Mike Lindup) seemed really up for it.
I think Level 42 are vastly underrated and have always been.
They have never been seen as "cool" or trendy- well I think that's total rubbish. The music speaks for itself-they have never needed gimmicks.
This tour I managed to get Mark Kings thumb tape at Liverpool which was fantastic.
All in all a fantastic month. I can't say which is my favourite track I honestly love 99.9% of their output, but Lessons in love, Love Games, Heaven in my hands or Kansas City Milkman would be a great place to start.
Do give them a try-who knows you may just like them...... See you on the next tour??
So why exactly do I love them(like simply doesn't come close!) so much? Well simply they make me happy. Pretty good start I think. I do get a bit hacked off with the alleged "experts"(yeah right) who are so sneery about Level 42. Why exactly? I thought the purpose of music was to entertain, move and make the listener happy. They do that and more.
Quite simply I am happier at a Level 42 concert than at any other time in my life. That might sound sad but two things- firstly I really don't care what anybody else thinks and secondly its true!
Also, I really think that there is a place for all types of music.
Level 42 are musically brilliant. I defy anyone to listen to Mark King playing his bass and not acknowledge you are watching a truly gifted individual at work.
I have seen them 59 times in total.
I have travelled to places that I would never have been otherwise and met some really lovely people.
So what is the music like? Well its not all funk-for a slower side to Level 42 listen to Staring at the sun(also the title of an album)or perhaps Hours by the window. Beautiful. For a good old dance then Lessons in Love or World Machine(another album title) or perhaps the sunbed song.
I guess I won't convince everyone but if you are open to new (fantastic) sounds do give them a try. It will be time well spent in my humble opinion. And who knows you might just be glad that you did. Go on you know you want to...........
Summary: The finest group in the world
