Outside of this however, most of the songs plodded along and the band just seemed to be going through the motions, as if they were counting down the number of tracks that they needed to perform. 'Open The Airwaves' which sounds so expansive on record rang through as hollow and unappetising. Sometimes I think its better not to have expectations when you go to a gig because there is a risk you can end up being disappointed. And so it was with Lowgold who played in Whelan's of Wexford Street last night (31/03/01). Their album 'Just Backward Of Square' is rich in guitar twists and harmonious melodies, so on paper hearing the album in a live environment should have been an exhilarating experience. A workmanlike performance that never rose above the ordinary, I was disappointed and some of gloss has been wiped from the enthusiasm I had for this band.
