I hate Madonna! 'Why Garry?' I hear you ask. Alright, let's take it from the start shall we? Being just a young man of eighteen years, I do not really remember much of Madonna’s early material. My memories of Madonna in the late eighties and early nineties consist mainly of cone shaped corsets and badly bleached blonde hair.
I can not honestly say I have ever liked any of Madonna's songs, most of them just irritate me, although I believe that every artist has the potential to release at least one good piece of music. In my opinion, the only good song Madonna ever released was 'Just Like a Prayer' although who can honestly say that their feet do not tap to the sound of 'Vogue' or 'Ray of Light'?
Even though I was never a Madonna fan, I have never really paid any attention to her, good or bad, until recently. The first time I ever felt any emotional feelings towards Madonna was when she released her cover version of the classic song 'American Pie'. Unfortunately this emotion was anger. When I heard Madonna’s version of the song for the first time I nearly took a heart attack. At first I thought that it must be some kind of joke. It wasn’t. Then I thought I was asleep and that I was having a nightmare. I was wide awake.
I don’t usually mind when artists cover famous songs. I did not give any of the cover versions that Robson and Jerome did a second thought. I thought that Boyzone’s cover of 'Love me for a Reason' was a vast improvement and I didn’t even blink an eye when I heard the relatively unknown boy band A-1’s cover version of A-Ha’s classic hit,'Take on Me'. I don’t usually mind cover versions because they are usually either almost the same as the original or better than it. Madonna however, has completely slaughtered a timeless classic with her ghastly attempt.
In Madonna’s version of 'American Pie', she
has taken out the original, near-perfect, guitar melody and drum beat and replaced them with a silly background noise which has a style that can only be described as ‘cheesy pop’. Not only has she taken out more than half of those moving lyrics that brought a tear to my eye the first time I heard them but she has also speeded the remaining lyrics up and added an eerie sounding echo to them.
As I have said before, I do not mind cover versions but who does Madonna think she is? I am sure that she has the talent to release a decent cover version of any song she wants, if she really put her mind to it, so why on earth did she insult the original version of 'American Pie' by releasing a pathetic attempt at a cover? I think that Madonna has done well for herself. She has established a career for herself in a time and field where it was hard for women like her to do so. She started many trends in her earlier days and was not afraid to experiment with new styles and images but what gives her the right to defile a perfectly good song? It makes me so angry that Madonna thinks she is so popular with he public that she can ruin a great song and get away with it. I’m sure that I am not the only person who feels this way about Madonna’s cover of 'American Pie' so I beg anyone else who feels the same way about it as I do to express your opinion. Who knows? It might get back to her some day.

I love everything Madonna has done, have all her albums...and I turn this song off too. It isn't great and I much prefer the original!

I'm 36, not 18, and a bit of an old hippie, I thought she slaughtered it too ;-)

I apologise to all the Madonna fans out there for this opinion but I really can't stand it when egotistical artists get ahead of themselves like that.
