The most recent delivery of Madonna's evolution (or devolution) is 'American Life'. For 20 years, she has maintained and expanded on her pop legend. Some records may be more revered than others, but long before New Kids On the Block, Boyzone, the Spice Girls, Britney Spears and 'N Sync was Madonna creating her blueprint on how to become immediately successful and then more (and more). Unfortunately, most acts tended to passively follow her map initially and are not savvy and/or motivated enough to complete follow through and expand on it.
