Stephen Merritt plays most of the instruments, and sings most of the songs, but other vocalists are showcased on around 20 of the 69 songs, which stops things from getting too samey. At last Stephen Merritt, who IS The Magnetic Fields, is gaining some critical recognition. The first I knew of this triple CD set was when I saw it in reviewed in The Independent on Sunday - and it was featured as CD of the week. Before that I had purchased the Magnetic Fields' "Get lost" album, and the earlier The 6ths "Wasps Nest", so I was already accustomed to his catchy, mesmerizing songs. His voice is a bit like Ian Curtis, or The Human League's Phil Oakey. Or how about Scott Walker with a more basic backing band?
