Her performance on X Factor last weekend reminded me why I absolutely loathe this woman, although I'd be hard pressed to know where to start. Originally arriving in the UK charts nearly 20 years ago, Mariah Carey is apparently America's biggest selling female, and hasn't done too badly out of our pockets over here in the UK.
Mariah Carey was born on the 27 March 1970, and by the age of 20, had already had her first single go into the top 10 promising us some top gospel style pop. Of course, the early start didn't last long, and before long she was competing with Whitney Houston on a series of over-emotive power ballads, the best of which was the stunning "Hero".
After her divorce from record boss Tommy Mottola in the late 90's, she left his record label, and decided to change gear a little in musical styles. She now adopts a much more hip-hop sound to her music, which didn't exactly hit the high notes of the charts earlier on in this decade. Recently, a resurgence of success has taken place, and Mariah has found herself back in popularity.
Mariah, the daughter of an opera singer, claims to have more octaves in her voice than any other female singer, although quite why she hasn't sung a note in tune in the past decade is anybody's guess. Back on her first couple of albums, notably Music Box, she was able to hold big notes and sing beautifully. However, she is now so intent on showing us how many octaves she has, that she forgets to actual sing the bleeting song.
Mariah also famously suffers from stage fright, bizarrely, given that she has no problem getting her gear off for the camera or hanging all over any given host in the most tacky way. This apparently prevents her from singing live. Her mime job on X Factor last week wasn't terrible, and certainly didn't fall under the "Britney lip synching" efforts. However, it is testament to her diva ways that she would appear on a show notorious for forcing people to sing live, and mime.
The most infuriating thing about Mariah is her Barbie doll ways. That silly little girl voice and her obsession with things like butterflies plastered all over her records makes her look like a first class clown. Sure, she had a nervous breakdown somewhere along the line, but her diva ways has probably more to do with her entourage allowing her to get away with it than any emotional distress she's had to endure.
Perhaps Mariah's many insecurities and odd behaviours have something to do with the racial abuse she suffered as a child. She is from Irish American descent at her mother's end and African American from her father's. Whilst you have to have sympathy with anybody who grows up enduring abuse of any sort, its hard to sympathise with this self indulgent woman who apparently demands entire hotel floors be emptied for her.
Although, it'll be obvious by now I'm not a fan of this overbearing hand-shaking diva, I'll mention a few of the songs I like purely to add some balance to the review. My favourite song of hers is probably her Christmas hit "All I Want For Christmas", which re-emerges every couple of years thanks to the change in chart rules that allow download tracks to enter the Top 40.
It is mostly her early material that I enjoy, most notably the brilliant debut single "Vision Of Love". That track started a run of 18 number 1 hits in America which ended with the extremely RnB flavoured Touch My Body last year. No doubt the number 1 hits will keep coming in her homeland, and I wouldn't be surprised if her current cover of Foreigners "I Wanna Know What Love Is" gives her her 19th number 1. Here in the UK, we're a bit wiser to her.
Mariah has also tried her hand at acting, and despite raspberry reviews, wasn't that bad in Glitter. In fact, she was moderately more bearable in the film than she is in her dreary self-obsessed music video's. Oddly, Mariah has also won 6 grammy awards, 3 of which were in 1991, and 3 she won more recently in 2006.
For those of you still interested in anything she does, now that she has abandoned anything remotely tuneful, this is a list of her albums;
Mariah Carey (1990)
Music Box (1993)
Merry Christmas (1994)
The Emancipation Of Mimi (2005)
Memoirs Of An Imperfect Angel (2009)
Mariah Carey is a world class multi-million selling artist responsible for several numver 1 and memoraable records. She has to date sold over 200 million records worldwide and is officially known as the "World's Best Selling Female Artist" and she is too right to be.
My personal favourite song of hers which everyone will know of is "Hero" which she wrote herself and sang. This became an instant hit and is known as one of the best songs in the world. I personally like how last year is was remade as a charity single sang by the X Factor 2008 finalists.
Along the years Mariah has inspired many people with her music and she is still going strong today. Her latest album I think is a bit of a let down though as it sways away from her older songs but she is still an amazing singer.
My favourite songs of hers are; Hero, Endless Love (with Luther Vandross), Without You, When You Believe (with Whitney Houston), Against All Odds (Both Solo and with Westlife), All I Want For Christmas and Touc My Body.
You should buy her records or have a listen to them online, you won't be disappointed.
A lot of people think Mariah Carey's rubbish, but at the end of the day, she can actually sing. There are so many other bands, especially rock and indie bands where the lead singers actually can't sing, or they shout. Mariah is my favourite singer and I have 6 of her albums. Her latest album was a slightly different style and didn't do as well, but I don't think her record company should have dropped her when she's sold so many records. Also, she worked really hard to get where she is, she waitressed to get money to record a demo tape and only had one pair of shoes, she didn't appear on a variety show first, like Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Lately things have been going wrong for her, with her breakdown and being dropped by Virgin. There are so many new singers now, like Ashanti, Christina Milian and Shakira and since Mariah has been going for a long time, people may be fed-up of her, but I think she can still get back up to the top of the charts if she has a good album. I admire her for her singing voice and because she has been singing for about 12 years. She has had loads of No 1's and achieved a lot. She has millions of fans and while the fans are still around, she will continue to sell records.
I have always loved Mariah Carey's music from the first time i heard it. I'm an amateur singer myself, hoping to become a bit more abd she was very inspiring. As she has become more famous though she has changed, no one can deny it. She has become very flirtatious, and her music videos can be quite raunchy. You don't want to listen to her music and have to have her bum and boobs in your face all the time. I'm not jealous, i admire her very much and my all time favourite song is 'Hero'. I just think she deserves better than that. She gets a lot of attention without flaunting herself all the time. She should be loved because of her music and not her looks. I think a lot of people criticise her unfairly. People judge her on the ways she acts, and on her personal life. Some people have told me how much they hate her when they haven't even listened to one of her songs. They have just decided her songs are bad because they don't like her personally. A friend of mine did the exact same thing but when she heard her music she thought it was great! Her music isn't to everyones taste but i doubt very much if anyone lives up to that description. Her music should be liked or disliked as a music not as her as a person. I think a lot of people who criticise her would be surprised if they took a few minutes to listen.
Love her or hate her, Mariah Carey was the biggest artist of the '90's. But, since the beginning of 2001 (when Mariah signed up to Virgin Records, she seemed to slip further and further into endless problems. Mariah was born into a mixed race family, and she inherited her amazing vocal talent off her mother. Her father left when she was three and she has not seen him since. In 1990, at the tender age of 20, Mariah was signed up to Columbia after the manager Tommy Motolla discovered her (singing as a backing singer, I think). Later in 1990, Mariah released her first self titled album along with her first single "Vision Of Love". They were both huge successes all over the world, and soon put Mariah in the same category as Whitney. Now 12 years and 10 albums later, Mariah is still around- but not quite as big as she once was. In August 2001, she suffered a mental breakdown due to her "exhausting schedules". This is because she had been filming two movies and recording an album at the same time. Tabloid papers revealed that "Mariah tried to commit suicide", but the report was quickly denied. In the mid 90's, Mariah decided to change her image into a slicker r and b style. Many fans were put off by this, but additionally she gained many new fans too. Mariah's first motion picture "Glitter" flopped big style and recieved terrible reviews. But, it was appauling afterall! At the start of 2002, Mariah was dropped by her new record company Virgin after less than a year. She is now apparently signed up to Def Jam. Mariah has had many relationship problems in her past, such as one failed marriage to Tommy Motolla and many dumped boyfriends. Here is a list of Mariah's albums- Mariah Carey (1990) Emotions (1991) MTV Unplugged (1992) Music Box (1993) Daydream (1995) Butterfly (1997) # Ones (1998) Rai
nbow (1999) Glitter (2001) Greatest Hits (2001) Here is a list of Mariah's most memorable singles- Vision Of Love (No.9) Emotions (No.17) Hero (No. 7) Without You (No.1) Fantasy (No.4) Honey (No.3) Heartbreaker (No.5) All I Want For Christmas Is You (No.2) Loverboy (No.12)
I won Mariah Carey's "Glitter" 3 weeks ago. I was very very happy because I love Mariah. When I listened "Glitter" for the first time I was very very surprised. In the album there are Mariah’s vocals and writing abilities. There are 12 tracks: "Loverboy"/“Loverboy remix” I prefer "Loverboy" non-remix version. Loverboy remix is danceable but Mariah's vocals are better in the original version. The video is really cool, I love it. 8/10 “Lead the way” I love this song. I think that is one of the best tracks of the album. It is a slow and powerful ballad and I really love it. It is a love-song and Mariah's voice is very very beautiful. The best! 10/10 “If we” It features Nate Dogg and Ja Rule. This is a great song and music is very very beautiful. Very danceable and funny song! Good! 9/10 “Didn’t mean to turn you on” Sometimes It is a little boring song. This is a remix of an 80’s song. It isn't one of my faves song and it isn't the best. 7/10 “Don’t stop (thinkin’ 4 Jamaica)” It is a great song. Sounds like Loverboy and Heartbreaker. It is very danceable but sometimes it is boring. 7/10 “All my life” I don't like this song. Mariah's voice is nice, but this song is really boring. I don't like it. 6/10 “Reflections (care enough)” Really touching and depth song. I love it, it is one of the best songs of the album. I think you could listen to it. I love Mariah's voice!!! It is a slow ballad, very powerful. 10/10 “Last night a dj saved my life” This is a good song but not the best. It is a rap song, a remix of an 80's song. I don't like the rapping but Mariah's voice is great. 8/10 “Want you” It is a duet with Eric Benet. I l
ike when they are singing together. A background song, with great voices. Very very good. 9/10 “Never too far” I think that this song is the best of the album. It makes me cry. It is a ballad, very powerful! I really love it. When I'm sad, I listen to it... 10/10 “Twister” It is a really nice ballad. I love it. I think it sounds like "Never too far" but I really like it. Very slow and depth. Good, very good! 9/10 I think you could listen to it... IT IS SO GOOD! Please, tell me if there are mistakes because I don't speak english very well... I use this site to improve my english!!
I tend to write mostly about music that I really enjoy. So I thought it was time I had a go at being objective about an artist whose music I really do not like (see, I’m trying hard, already – I almost wrote “I really cannot stand”!) Maria Carey... Yes I know she’s sold bucketloads of albums and singles, so lots of people must like her music. Funny how I don’t know a single person who owns a Maria Carey album. Maybe they do, they just won’t admit it, and hide them away from me when I visit... >>> The music <<< Carey started to make it internationally with the “Vision of love” single, in 1990. She specialised in fairly bland songs, slickly performed in a virtuoso kind of way, with her powerful voice, which covers a 5-octave range. Through the 1990s her music changed very little, except for taking in a few dance and hip hop influences. Often the songs are covers. Nothing wrong with that, if they are done well. Her cover of “Without You”, was really dire. I can’t imagine anyone ever doing any better than Nilsson, and I have no idea why she thought there was any point at all in recording that song. Another, in my opinion dire, cover was “I’ll be there” – again a huge hit, but why everyone didn’t just go out and buy the unbeatable Jackson Five version, I’ll never know. There have been many, many other hit singles, such as “Dreamlover”, “Emotions”, and “Always be my baby”. Her greatest hits collection, “#1s”, is, without doubt, packed with hit songs. MTV Unplugged – recorded using an ensemble of musicians (almost an orchestra in fact) and 10 backing singers. Not really in the spirit of what was intended for the Unplugged programmes, which are usually sparse, and very acoustic. >>> So what’s wrong with her? <<< Well, itR
17;s partly the choice of songs – the kind of romantic slush that Simon Bates used to play on “Our tune”. That’s a generalisation, I know, but generally, they are lyrically and musically pretty unchallenging. Oh, except for the fact that at every opportunity Carey has a go at showing off that voice (did I mention it covers 5 octaves?). And that’s the other problem, the voice… Yes, she has an extensive range, but she uses it in a way that often just makes you think she’s hollering, rather than singing. Also, it’s all so clinical, somehow – I imagine that it’s all been rehearsed to death, and there’s no room for spontaneity. I have never yet been moved in any way, not even fleetingly, by anything she has sung. In essence, there’s no soul, or humour, or real emotion, in her delivery. And that means, for me, that her singing is, to put it mildly, dull. I also find it extremely irritating. >>> The myths and legends <<< If you believe all the stories about her, Mariah Carey can be a little, erm, temperamental… well, she is a big star, after all... Here are some of my favourites: # She will only allow photographs to be taken from one side. # She has prima-donna-ish requirements in her dressing rooms. # Her publicists tried to get us to belive that she was a voice that covers across 7 octaves. Not true. (but she does have a 5 octave range, and that’s still impressive, did I mention that?) # She bathes with her dog (I have no idea if this is true - don’t want to be accused of spreading rumours here…) # There is a widely held belief that she once said she’d like to be skinny like “the poor starving kids” – untrue (based on a spoof by someone else). >>> Back to the music <<< Luckily, most of Mariah Carey’s songs are, for me, instantly forgettable, so I can hones
tly say that I no longer even know how many of the songs I've mentioned go. But I have heard them all, I can promise you, and I do know that I did not enjoy hearing them one bit, and I do not want to ever hear any of them ever again.
Mariah Carey to me is one of the most inspiring and talented musicians ever. Okay, everyone has their say on what she wears and what she does - but no one can or should deny her extraordinary talent. I have been one of her biggest fans since I heard her song "Hero." Then, I found out she writes her own songs and does her own music - and all her songs are just great to listen to. Now, anyone can just take a pen and write lyrics or figure out the melody to a song, but it is rare to write the most beautiful lyrics and find the perfect melody to compliment every song. Mariah Carey can do that. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Celine Dion, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, and even Whitney Houston does not write their own music ~ they just have someone that writes and makes the song for them, and they are just the voice. Mariah writes it and then she sings. And she has an incredible voice as well - with a six octave range. You can tell that Mariah Carey was meant to be who she is and she deserves all the respect.
OK, I'm biased, because I'm one of her biggest fans ever, but if you give Mariah a try you'll realise there's more than what the media portray. For a start as a person, from watching countless hours or interviews, reading countless magazine articles etc. I sincerely believe that Mariah Carey is a decent person who truly cares about her fans. You could say I'm delusional due to great admiration, but there you go. She tries to make music that brings benefit and positivity, enlightenment and happiness into people's lives, she truly believes what she is singing and genuinely has a desire for musical perfection and not just releasing what will get her the biggest sales. I could go on forever, so I'll try and be concise. Vocally, as I'm sure most people would not contest, she is stunning. She sings from the heart, with power and emotion incomparable to anyone. She has always written all her material (apart from occassional covers) she never has songs written for her. When she does cover, she in a sense remakes the song, so it's not just an imitation of the original version. She also produces, directs videos and is now entering into movies. A bad move maybe, but reviews have been extremely positive, that she is a wonderful naturally talented actress. Her lyrics are meaningful, beautiful and occassionally profound, but unfortunately the most commercial material has until now always been released. However she has just completed her original recording contract with Sony music, and now will look for a contract with more control over her career. Apparently she wants $25 million per album, which if she gets, will be the most expensive recording contract in history. Which ofcourse I think she deserves, she's sold somewhere over 120 million albums since 1990, broke uncountable records (admittedly mostly in the states) and touched many a millions hearts. Live is what she specialises in, and listen
to some of the less glossy, more played down performances, and her technique will just blow you away. That's it, Mariah might not be your taste, but she is worthy of respect, her first album was wrote mostly in high school on which she got a 8ish album recording contract, how many artists can say that?
I remember when I was fourteen and I fell in love with Mariah Carey. Her music was laid back, easy to sing to and very poppy. And she didn't look too bad either. Classic Mariah such as Dreamlover, Fantasy, Hero, Anytime You Need A Friend and Without You (yes I know it's a cover) were in abundance on her albums and there were rarely any songs that would receive the skip treatment on the cd player. Today though is a different story. The papers are full of instances that the singer/songwriter has had plastic surgery (allegedly) and is becoming ever-more the diva and it is showing in her work in a negative way. The latest album has seen just three releases in the UK as she has strived to go back to her "roots" (her family are multi-ethnic) and these roots appear to be shoddy R&B rip offs. Gone are the melodious catchy tunes and here come a barrage of moody, downbeat and throwaway songs which do little to stay in the imagination. She now seems intent only to communicate with the dolphins and dogs rather than us humans. Just because you can stretch your vocals through five octaves Mariah doesn't mean that you should at every given opportunity. Go back to what we love you for, catchy up-beat numbers and killer ballads and forget the trash that adorned much of "Rainbow" (oh and just because you know a few people doesn't mean you should duet with them all!). We have a case in hand for you. Britain saw the rebirth of Kylie Minogue last year after a few years in indie wilderness and has even got Madonna's seal of approval. Here's hoping that this years' "All That Glitters" Soundtrack helps to steer you back. Heres hoping anyway!
Mariah, in my opinion is one of the top female performing artists of the last few years and I always look forward to the next album she belts out. There is no denying she has matured and her styles have changed along the way. Especially the last 2 albums, Butterfly and this one, are very R&B and Hip Hop influenced. But the great thing is that the old Mariah, with her trademark ballads and up tempo feel-good numbers, is still here. The gorgeous ballads, "Can't Take That Away from Me" and "Petals" prove this. Many people disregard Mariah as a sugar-sweet, wailing diva - but there is really talent in this woman. Aside from that amazing voice, with rich low notes and glass shattering high tones, she composes much of the music and lyrics , with help from fantasic talents such as Dianne Warren and David Foster, herself. This album offers so much - you have those sentimental ballads, fueled with heartfelt emotion, and those feel-good numbers that make you wanna dance. And the two interludes are very effective. Every song tells a story personal to Mariah. Anyway I give this album the thumbs up - it is a must for any Mariah fan and I would reccommend it to those who aren't - as there is something for everyone here.
In my opinion Mariah Carey is the at this time one of the best vocalists in the world I think she is better than Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson who are both extremely talented in their own right's. I personally think that all the latest Mariah Carey song on the Rainbow album are simply fantastic each one proving the strength of Mariah's voice wishing we could sing as good as she does Mariah has also released many songs were she's sang alongside American rappers each tune a hit for the fantastic vocalist.
Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, in Long Island, New York. Her name, Mariah, comes from a Native American language and means "the wind." She was named from the song "They Called The Wind Mariah" from the musical "Paint Your Wagon." She was the third and the last child in the family. Mariah's mother was a white Irish opera singer from Indiana and her father, Roy Carey, was a black Venezuelan aeronautical engineer. At the age of 2 Mariah first time showed her talent. When Patricia was rehearsing Verdi's Rigoletto, she missed a cue, and Mariah sang it perfectly from the right spot. Patricia was aware of Mariah's gift and started giving her singing lessons when she was 4 years old. Mariah was able to duplicate every sound she heard. Mariah's father and Patricia divorced, when she was 3 years old. Their marriage was facing racial intolerance from people around them. This probably had some influence on their relationship. Also Mariah's older sister Alison and brother Morgan suffered. Alison had darkest skin, so she was always the target of racial prejudice, and Morgan had epilepsy. Mariah and Morgan stayed with their mother after the divorce, but Alison lived with her father. Mariah and her mother frequently moved around Long Island and New York. They didn't have a lot of money, so they couldn't afford a house. They sometimes even stayed with their friends. For Mariah this was a scary growing up. She never felt stable. She was always afraid "that somebody would pull the rug out under her." Some neighbors didn't allow their children to play with her because she was a "bad influence." This affected Mariah in a way, so she never felt secure as a child. The only thing that kept up her hopes was her music. This was the only thing that made her secure. She had always wanted to become a professional singer. Mariah was as a child influenced by many musi
cians: Sarah Vaugham, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight. Her favorite song was "Bridge over Troubled Water" by Aretha Franklin. She used to listen to the radio to fall a sleep. When Mariah watched commercials on television, she always sang along. Mariah wasn't a perfect child. When her mother would ask her to clean up the room, she would say that someday other people will be cleaning her stuff. Even school wasn't too important to her. She was smart but she showed her interest only in things she liked. She was interested in creative writing. When she was in high school she was often late for classes, because she used to hang up in studios late into the night, so the teachers gave her a nickname Mirage. After finishing the high school, college wasn't on her mind. All she ever wanted was to be a singer and her music meant everything to her. She didn't allow anybody or anything to interfere with her plan. She started writing lyrics. At that time she wrote "Someday" and "Love Takes Time." At the time of the graduation she was introduced to Ben Margulies, who had some kind of recording studio. With his help she wrote many of her early songs. At the time of graduation Mariah went to New York City to start on her own. She worked as a waitress, a coat-checker and she even worked one day in a beauty salon (She quit the job because employees had to wear stupid nicknames). At night she was working in studio with Ben. Mariah recorded her first demo tape, but she didn't have anywhere to go with it. That was a very rough time for her. She even had some contract offers for her lyrics, but she didn't allow that somebody else would be singing her songs. Later 18 year-old Mariah became a backup singer for Brenda K. Starr. At first she didn't want to go to the audition, but Brenda's drummer, who was also Mariah's friend, convinced her. She went on the audition and Brenda took her as a
backup singer. They became real close friends. Mariah worked as a backup singer for almost a year. In 1988 Brenda K. Starr introduced Mariah to some people of the CBS Records. Mariah was very unsecured but she was persuaded to give a demo tape to Jerry Greenberg, chief of WTG Records. This demo somehow came into the hands of Tommy Mottola, president of Columbia Records. When he heard the demo, he was fascinated by Mariah's voice. The songs on the demo were "All Alone In Love", "Prisoner", "Someday", "All In Your Mind", "Do You Ever Wonder". When he tried to contact Mariah, nobody knew who she was, because she and Brenda already left. Tommy spent few days searching for her. When he finally found her, he asked Mariah to sign the contract with Columbia Records. This was a big start for not even nineteen years old Mariah. Mariah started to work on her first album, Mariah Carey. All of the singles reached number one on the charts. The album was a big success, and Mariah was already working on her second album, Emotions. Album Emotions was released in the following year. This album was not selling as well as the first one and everyone was a bit disappointed. But Mariah didn't give up. On March 16, 1992, Mariah appeared on MTV's "Unplugged," that was her first live performance. Later album MTV Unplugged EP was released, but it is not considered as a real album, because it only contains songs from previous albums. Mariah had a lot of support during her recording from Tommy Mottola and their friendship grew into something more. Finally 23 year-old Mariah and 42 year-old Tommy Mottola were married on June 5, 1993, Manhattan's St.Thomas Episcopal Church. This was a really big wedding and there were many famous friends: Billy Joel, Gloria Estefan, Robert De Niro, Bruce Springsteen,... After the wedding Mariah finished recording another album and started to p
lan her next tour. The next album, Music Box was again very successful. Singles "Hero" and "Dreamlover" reached number one on the charts. She dedicated "Hero" to the victims of the shootings that year. Music Box became her best-selling album. This encouraged her to start touring. Mariah started a US tour over six cities. On the first show in Miami Mariah was kind of nervous and the next day her performance was highly criticized. The audience was very supportive, but bad reviews really hurt her. The rest of the tour was accepted in a better light. She performed in Rosemont, Illinois, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and New York City. In November 1994 she released album Merry Christmas This album was a mixture of traditional Christmas songs and some new ones. It became best-selling Christmas album ever. Two songs "Miss You Most At Christmas Time" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" were released as singles and they are still very popular at holiday time. Her sixth album Daydream came out in 1995. Of course she achieved first places on the charts again. It is interesting that some of these songs are collaborations with other artists. She sang a duet with Wu-Tang rapper Old Dirty Bastard in "Fantasy," and she worked together with the Boyz II Men on "One Sweet Day." "One Sweet Day" was number one on charts for sixteen weeks. After the release of the last album Mariah went on her second tour, world tour. She held three concerts in Japan and in Europe she performed in Germany, Netherlands, France and England. Just before Mariah's 4th wedding anniversary on May 30, 1997, Mariah and Tommy announced their separation. There were many rumors about their marriage: how Tommy was trying to control her. She really needed the freedom, so she had to divorce him. Some people explained, that Mottola was trying to be in control of everything (choosing Mariah'
s friends, what she would wear, where she would go...). That just wasn't Mariah's life style, she needed her freedom, so she separated from her husband. Mariah said that they are still friends and she 'considers him a part of her family'. In July Mariah released her first video Honey for the album Butterfly. She really showed her acting talents and revealing her new 'style' for the first time, playing 'a Bond girl', escaping from a big castle... Mariah's latest album Butterfly was released on September 16th in 1997. Mariah has changed her style on this album, but she still kept many beautiful ballads. She worked with many artists like: Sean 'Puffy' Combs, Missy Elliot,.. and together they've created some of Mariah's greatest songs. The album has 12 (14) songs, half of them are ballads and the others are in R&B and hip-hop style. The album didn't get the best reviews from some people, who don't like Mariah's new style. Mariah refers to the album as 'her favorite one', because she really had free hands for the first time. She could now express all her real feelings, without anybody controlling her. Butterfly is definitely a very personal album, because it's talking about Mariah's deepest thoughts and feelings,.. She says: 'For the first time since the first album, it feels like I'm letting a piece of myself go'. The new Mariah is more independent and free... She explains: 'I feel more free to put more of myself into my music. There's a lot of real emotion in Butterfly. I lived with it. I woke up to it.' After the release of Butterfly, Mariah had started a world tour in 1997/98 to thank her fans for the support. First she performed before her Japanese fans and in Taiwan and later she also visited Australia and Hawaii. Now that she is free, she is also discovering new things, not just in music. Mariah has started taking acting lesson
s, which she describes as 'a way of discovering myself and getting in touch with my feelings'. She says it doesn't, matter if she doesn't get to Hollywood, because she is doing this only for herself. Acting was one of her dreams, ever since she can remember. Mariah would definitely be a great actor, because she already confirmed that in her music videos. It would be nice to see her on a big screen someday, but until than she will create the best music in the world... Mariah has been working really hard after releasing her last album Butterfly. She has released five singles (Honey, Butterfly, Breakdown, The Roof, My All) and also filmed the music videos. She has even started to think about her acting career by announcing her first movie 'All That Glitters' (from Disney). It will talk about a young singer, who's trying to overcome many problems on her way to fame and glory (racial, social)... Mariah has won the Award for Female Soul/Rhythm & Blues Artist on American Music Awards '98, proving that she's still the best. Mariah has officially divorced from Tommy Mottola in March 1998, when she had a really quick divorce. Mariah staged another great performance in April '98 at VH1's (US tv channel) concert Divas Live. Beside Mariah the guests were also Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Shania Twain... On May 1998 Mariah won two important World Music Awards: Award for World's Best Selling R&B Artist and World's Best Selling Recording Artist of the 90’s. This was another world-wide recognition of her great talent. Later she was brought together with Whitney Houston to sing the title song for the animated movie 'The Prince Of Egypt'. This finally proved that Mariah and Whitney are no rivals, in fact, they've established a good friendship and made a beautiful performance for this song, titled 'When You Believe'. Mariah decided to try herself i
n other music waters and she collaborated with the producer and rapper Jermaine Dupri (JD) on the song 'Sweetheart'. They've made a pretty cool song, but the single was not released in US, which affected its position on charts. Though it was a good material, it didn't make it to number one... At this time Mariah closed her record label 'Crave'. She didn't give a very good reason for doing it, but apparently the decision came from the head of Sony music. Their explanation was, that the artists weren't good on the charts and didn't sell good enough... On November 17 '98 Mariah released '#1's' her massive greatest hits collection. It was a collection of her 13 number one US hits, but she also included some bonus songs... The album was well accepted by the fans, though it didn't do so well on the album charts. Mariah had quite a few TV appearances (on The Oprah Show, Jay Leno...) during this time. This goes to show some of the massive success that Mariah has achieved in her short career, she has went from nothing to Mega star and fine well she deserves it - Well Done Mariah!!
I bought this album with a gift voucher that someone gave me for Christmas, and I think all the songs on there are great. Mariah can reach notes that no-one else seems to be able to reach, and for that reason you have to admire her singing. BUT as a person, I find her very annoying. Whenever she is shown in an interview, she is lounging on a sunbed or similar in a pose reminiscent of an old movie star. Why? I'm sorry, but it doesn't make her look sexy, just silly. (Maybe the guys would say different!) And those crochet bikinis she wears - yeuch! The latest cringe-making view of her was when I saw the interview with her and Westlife, plugging their latest single, Against All Odds and she was trotting ahead of them, one arm held high, in what looked like one of Marilyn Monroe's poses. Except that as woman, I can admit that Marilyn Monroe was sexy. Maybe I'm being too bitchy, after all, men seem to find her very attractive, but I would say to Mariah - tone it down a bit girl!
Unfortunately, the music industry of the world needs people like Mariah Carey. Attractive, uninspiring, pleasant voiced, unoriginal women like her sell a great deal of records, so for the purpose of profit, she does - indeed must - exist. To condemn her for her music is kind of missing the point, even though that music is worthy of intense condemnation. The best anyone can do about this terrible situation is voice their disapproval, and so I shall do just that. I disapprove of mariah carey, and all those who consider what she produces to be worth listening to.
