Martin Newell is not an underrated artist. He is a very highly rated artist. Unfortunately he's not a very well known artist. This is largely his own fault. He makes brilliant music and then refuses to promote it. So no wonder then that only XTC fans (Andy Partridge is a close friend and collaborator) and a very small number of people who bought his Cleaners From Venus albums in the early 80s even know he does music at all. Most people know him better as the UKs most published poet. He writes 2 or three poems a week for The Independent and often pops up on Radio Four or simiilar. Or in your school or library.
