Genius, a word synonymous with intellectuals, it is sometimes used to describe the talents of football players and the like. So genius would be a word rarely attributed to a DJ. Well Mauro Picotto is a genius. There is no other way of putting it; he is without a doubt one of the finest DJs the world has ever seen. Look beyond that scary face and the large orange classes, its all in the music.

Mauro Picotto is better known as the Lizard man and for good reason. His really well known and famous tunes have been attributed with the names of lizards. These stunning tracks are namely Lizard, Iguana and the amazing Komodo or Save a Soul, as it is also known.

Mauro Picotto originates from Torino, Italy, which makes him one of Italy’s finest DJs alongside Mario Pui'. Picotto is 34 years old and despite being recognised as a true great only quite recently, he has had a long career as a DJ. Among Picotto’s successes is the fact that he is the label manager of BXR records and probably the greatest producer of tunes that have been made in Media Records. He has one many awards including Best International DJ, Best Producer of music and radio hit of the year for Komodo, which, as it happens, I am listening to now and it is truly deserving of this award. Picotto has recently released The Double Album that contains all his own hits as well as a few future successes.

Picotto’s music varies from track to track but is mainly classed as trance although there are definitely other beats throughout some tunes, which veer off to techno, house or even hardcore at times. The music manages to infuse through your head like no other and the rhythms and beats have a funny way of getting deep inside you. I have a few Mauro Picotto CD’s –

Right, so his music is great and he looks a little weird, just like every DJ then? No! If only I could include a music file in this op it would make things a lot easier. Ahh well, you’ll just have to do with me trying to convey some of his best tunes before you rush out and buy The Double Album.

Komodo/Save a soul is perhaps Mauro’s best-known tune. It starts off fairly normally with a thumping beat. Then the high notes come in accompanied by a nice drumming. The speed is fairly slow for a trance track but it infuses you just the same. It is very relaxing then the voices come in singing their soft song. This is kind of unexpected for this sort of track. After the heavenly voices the tune builds up again in a crescendo of sound. The track changes from this point on and becomes quite enthralling. It really is a get up and dance tune and a great one at that.

Proximus is a great tune in my opinion so much that I bought it on a single, which has no less than seven different mixes on it. This is a medley with Amedeas and is much more of a chillout song than the others but is still fairly upbeat and strong. The relaxing middle bit however has been used and abused for various TV adverts, which takes the shine off it for a while. Listen to it and you tend to picture the advert, which is not a very good one and can be annoying. Proximus quickly picks up the pace after this and storms right through to the end.

Lizard is another good tune with a cool rhythm and some shouty “It’s coming to get ya!” words added in for a change. Lizard is faster than Komodo but isn’t quite as good despite the stunning synth’d tune that kicks in halfway through. A real crowd-pleaser is how this t
rack could be described and that would not be far wrong.

Iguana is my favourite Mauro Picotto track. I just can’t resist the deep synthesiser that provides the rhythm and everything seems to fit together perfectly. The voice over the music adds to the feeling and the whole track is fresh and jumpy. It speeds up and is added to by a really good noise now and again. The track is varied which stops it getting repetitive and at one point drops the beat altogether for something calmer.

If you are into this type of music you have probably already heard of Picotto, if not go buy the album and spend some quality time listening to these tunes. They really are great, free from the usual repetitiveness of this music. Mauro Picotto is a really class DJ and if you want to catch him in action he is at God’s Kitchen, Global gathering towards the end on July with 75 other world class DJs, 6 arenas and 25000. It will be amazing.
