I first got into Metallica when I was about 12, as most blokes seem to, however I have not got out of it yet, as almost all others have. The first album I heard was the Black album. I have listened to all of the others, old and new, and I can't say that I enjoyed any of them as much as the Black album. I enjoy all of the songs on the album, whereas I haven't enjoyed all the songs on any of the others. Metallica have bought out 4 albums in recent history: Load, Re-Load, Garage inc. and S&M. I didn't like Load, however some of the songs are growing on me, Re-load was probably one of their better albums, as far as I am concerned. Garage inc had some of their better old songs on it, but a lot of covers (well, it was a covers album I guess), and I liked it. S&M was with an orchestra, which was interesting, but I think ruined a lot of their songs. Ohh well. I think that their peak was at the Black album, and they have been going down ever since.
