Advantages: Millencolin, Music was amazing, Anti Flag
Disadvantages: none
If you've read any of my other opinions on dooyoo about Millencolin, then you will be aware just how much i love them. This is why i was wetting my pants in excitement on the day of Friday 26th April, the day of the Millencolin concert. The concert had been moved from Manchester Uni, to the Academy due to demands for tickets. As the Academy is a bigger venue. I left my house late, as my friend, you know who you are Rory, was late. I was very agitated waiting for the bus, because i did not want to miss any of Anti Flag, who i am also a big fan of. When we finally got to the venue at about 8, half an hour after the doors had opened, i realised by the sound of 'Spaz's House Destruction Party', that i was missing Anti-Flag. Thankfully for Rory's life, we had only missed a small amount of their set. Anti Flag were everything i expected, angsty, political and great musicians. They played all my favourites like 'Die for your Government' and 'This Machine Kills Fascists'. However to the distaste of some in the audience they spouted Politics between all songs, including branding Tony Blair, George Bush and The Conservatives fascists. Also their message seemed to be wasted on some of the crowd, as i overheard the conversation between 2, id say 13 year olds, saying it isn't a good message to tell people to die for your Government. The next support act were the Donots. I didn't particularly know to much about these, apart from hearing one song and knowing they were German. They were totally different to Anti Flag, more pop punksters, but still good. I liked their music, but the German singer, who had the most American accent, was unbelievably annoying, talking complete crap between songs. Apparently they, like Millencolin, were also missing their drummer due to a broken arm. Finally Millencolin were up, minus Mathias on drums who had broken his arm. Although i don't remember who was standing in for
Mathias, he did a fine job and you couldn't tell he was a stand in. Other than Mathias the band were complete, there on stage for their first time ever in Manchester. They kicked off with possibly their most known song, No Cigar, off the album Pennybridge Pioneers. The crowd became a huge jumping mass of bodies, in which i lost my shoe, only to find it, after hopping up and down, about 5-10 minutes later. Nikola was in fine form, as were the whole of the band, as they kicked out songs from all albums, from Same Ol Tunes to Home From Home. After the loss of my shoe i had decided to move slightly back to the slam pits, in order to get a better view, and so i could move around more freely. The slam pits were very enjoyable, you could skank around and everyone was in good humour, just enjoying the music. The set lasted for about 1hr 15 mins during which everyone was catered for. My favourite songs of the night were 'Lozin Must', 'Bullion', 'Fox' and 'Duckpond', although all songs were delivered faultlessly. During a three song encore and to end the night Millencolin performed a great cover of the Operation Ivy anthem Knowledge, which was a great way to end an amazing night. The concert was by far the best i have ever been to, and although this may be taken as biased because i love Millencolin so, my friends who weren't fans before hand, definitely are now. It was that good. If you have the chance to go and see them you must, whether you are a fan, or you've never heard of them, i guarantee that you will not be disappointed.
