Advantages: Both great DJ's
Disadvantages: Where is yella?
This is an extremely interesting topic for anyone who likes or has followed Dr Dre. Going back to the NWA days DJ Yella was the best man for the job. He had style and could mix anything, he made some absolutely unstoppable beats for Eazy E and NWA on the whole. Since the split of NWA and with Eazy passing Yella has presumably gone into hibernation within the suburbs of Los Angeles. Having left NWA Dr Dre picked up a new DJ and co-producer. His name “Mel Man.” Mel man is the man behind all of Dr Dre’s albums and also behind all of the albums in which Dre has produced. Mel Man is the man on the decks for Snoop Dogg and Xzibit also. He is the man everyone wants to mix for them, but is he as good as DJ Yella. I don’t think must has changed in the rap world since the break of NWA, well I suppose it hasn’t been that long before they split. I think it is possible for Mel Man to be better than Yella for Dr Dre’s recent music because it involves making a lot of small interludes, plus on the 2001 album, Mel Man also appears in a few tracks talking which is something Yella never did. Yella was the silent part in NWA except when he exploded on the decks producing superb scratching which kicked off many tracks which, NWA produced. I do however think Mel Man is certainly the better man for Dr Dre now. Why? He is not only a DJ but also a co-producer, which obviously plays a massive part in the production of not only Dr Dre’s albums, but Snoop Dogg’s and Xzibit’s fro example. Plus with Dre producing Mel Manhas a lot more work to do with advertisement etc. whereas Yella simply mixed for NWA and no more. On the whole I still think Yella is a better DJ for mixing and scratching, but there is more to it nowadays and Mel Man has proved he is capable of the task. I would really like to hear your opinions too so please let me know.
