I 'm not too sure what I am going to put in this opinion as such, so bear with me, but I have felt drawn to this category for a while. I love a lot of music. I have to listen to music. When I first moved to university I had no stereo and was practically pulling my hair out. If I had to choose between a old tape and a new CD, the old tape would win everytime. Yeah yeah, poorer quality, but every bit of music I own reminds me of a day, time , place or person. I have been told that I use music as a form of carthasis. I guess I do. I have two plastic boxes full of tapes I can't bear to throw out. I have come to realise the important role music plays in my life. I have tried to play various instruments, with little success. I am bereft of the Welsh vocal ability of folklore and coal mines. But still , but still. When I find a lyric that I identify with or a melody that I adore, it is almost like falling in love. I want to hear that song again and again. I envy a person who can hold a tune as gently as a flower. I admire the ability to share an emotion so distinctly. Following my recent problems with depression. I came to acknowlege that although catharsis can be good, it can also highlight all the blackness in my charcoaled self and so I have made a concerted effort to surround myself with artists who make me feel womanly and alive. I have also come to realise that nature has a music all of her own. Sometimes I just sit in the garden snd listen to the birds and the trees and feel refeshed. (No I don't hug the trees) I have also become aware that certain artists lower my mood or make me think of painful events. My friends laugh when I say that Radiohead are banned from my flat, but as much as I adore them, they are because they ease me into the greyness of lost love and sad days. I also cannot listen to Rainy days and Mondays for the same reason... Scoff
if you will, but I have realised that my love for music can also be bad for me. Next time you are tempted to put on your melancholy music, think again. Another thing I really love about music is that it is such a fluid beast. People go on about certain types of music not being music, but in fact music is something for everyone. I once got asked if I had to choose another disability what would I least like it to be. (Yes, it was one of those late night, early morning what if's) and I shuddered at the thought of never hearing music again.

- 13/10/01 Oooh, I so totally agree with you. I fall in love with songs and lyrics. My favourite lyrics belong to the song 'I'll string along with you' (I even put the lyrics into the Diana Krall op I did as I think they are so beautiful). I also identify with singers who show real emotion in their voice. I love Mary J Blige. Even though she doesn't have the greatest of voices she just has such passion and emotion that really shine through in her songs. OOooh, I could go on about this forever. IN fact, you have inspired me to do an op on this subject myself. Would you mind if I did an op in this catagory? I don't want you to think I'm copying from you or anything.
Love and hugs,
Jojo
:)xx
P.S If it's any consolation, Radiohead are banned in my house too. They do such beautiful powerful songs but I can't listen to them without bursting into tears! |
