Advantages: We should be enjoying ourselves, not politely clapping middle-class blokes with acoustic guitars

Disadvantages: An increase in hangovers

Why do British bands have to peddle out slow and uninteresting ballads? We currently have to tolerate Travis, Starsailor and Turin Brakes amongst others. I agree that some of these bands have produced catchy, melodious numbers, but where is the energy and good natured hedonism that we once enjoyed? Where are the British musicians who could make noise and enjoy themselves?

There are some great American bands around at the moment who typify the good times last shown over here by the Happy Mondays, Stone Roses, Oasis, etc. The Strokes are an example of an American culture which concentrates more on showmanship than shoegazing. The British equivalents are out there and they need more attention.
It pains me to see kids of today walking around in Slipknot and Papa Roach t-shirts. Sure these bands are ok, but they don't compare to what we had when Britpop was about: Terrorvision, The Wildhearts, Therapy? Three cracking bands who had bags of catchy songs which mostly went unnotcied because the media wouldn't sell scruffy looking blokes in leather pants. But a group of fellas in red boiler suits and masks? No problem. Marilyn Manson has made his name with his image, but what happened to having substance over style? If Manchester United fell down the league people wouldn't turn out in their thousands every week and spend fifty quid on a replica shirt.

We need to get back to the bones. The White Stripes have made a good stab at this, but they're yet another band from accross the pond.

Come on Britain. We're better than this. The good British rock band still exists. Try listening to SilverGinger 5, the band formed by the former singer of the Wildhearts. It's cheesy, good-time rock. But isn't that what everybody wants? You're all just too scared to admit it.
