Advantages: Steps, Take That, Boyzone
Disadvantages: The cost
Music in general in general is probably one of the biggest topics on dooyoo to cover because of all the different types; rock, jazz, dance, pop, etc. It's one of the biggest money making businesses in the world. It lets people confide within the music, making there always be one sort of music for the type of mood your in, whether it's a jolly mood or depressed mood. Somehow, it helps you. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Rock = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = If someone said rock to you I'm sure you would reply the same as me, "the same as stone, find them on a beach sometimes." But no, this is a whole genre of music. Taking its name from a different word for stone, rock is the name for a family of different types of guitar based music. Soft Rock: Usually relaxing, slow moving music, it can be very good for when you just want to sit down and think. The pioneers being bands like Bryan Adams and Bon Jovi. Bands such as Starsailor, Spiritualized and Embrace are the main bands playing soft rock at the moment. Not as successful as other types of rock but if you want something you want to think about, them then this is the stuff to put on in the background. One of my personal favourites. Out of ten: 9 Hard Rock: Large, leather wearing, crazy hair styled men. No, I'm not talking about Laurence off changing rooms but the stereotypical view of someone who likes heavy metal. This type of music is usually fast moving, loud (in less you've got the volume down) and in your face. If you went to a heavy metal concert you, might not come back alive. Bands such as Slipknot, Marilyn Manson and Rage Against The Machine are the modern heavy metal bands, with the pioneers of Heavy Metal being bands like Def Leppard being the pioneers of it. You either love it, or hate it. Out of ten: 5 Indy Rock: A more modern type of rock, with bands such as Oasis, Stereophonics and Blur be
ing the pioneer's for it. Though the most influential group coming from this category has to be Radiohead, who have made some of the best music to ever grace this Earth, albums such as The Bends and O.K Computer being their best work. I do like this combination of guitar, vocals and drums, changing speeds every so often. Out of ten: 9 Rock 'n' Roll: The Rolling Stones and The Who are the famous bands who made this music. Still very much around today this is again guitar based music. Very successful back in the 60's and 70's making a large impact on the music world. Elvis Presley (his earlier stuff) also was being very influential on many bands music. Out of ten: 8 Commercial Rock: Over the past few years this type of music has grown and grown. Not really to my liking but it has. Bands such as Linkin Park, Sum 41 and Alien Ant Farm have started to get a big fan base. These are like pop bands, but play there own instruments and usually sing live. Out of ten: 5 Rock 'n' Blues: Not really around much any more, but in the 50's, 60's and 70's this was very successful. People such as Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton being the pioneer?s for this slow moving, mostly guitar based style music. Though some people have started to bring this back, people like Moby. Out of ten: 8 My conclusion to rock is that theres so many different types you have to like something about it. Overall out of 10 (can't be bothered to do lots of maths): 9 If I have left any types of rock out and your that obsessed that you think I must know about them, leave a comment. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Pop music = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = If I was to say pop to you I'm sure you'd be thinking, "a polite word for fart" but no, pop is a whole genre of music. Good looking, young and not really needing to be able to sing, is wha
t the needs are for a modern day popstar. Though this was not the case in the 60's and 70's (my mother tells me). The word "pop" is just a shortened word for popular. 60'S, 70'S And 80'S Pop Music: The 60's was the decade in which the biggest band ever, was made. You must be thinking, "is he crazy, Hear'say were made about a year ago." Well no, I'm actually talking about The Beetles, this band of four young, bowl shape haired Scowsers were to become the biggest most influential band in history. Their catchy lyrics, catchy guitar riffs was the potion for a world wide smash. The Monkeys, were the classic boy band, with their own television show they were destined for pop stardom. In the 70's it was The Carpenters turn for pop stardom, with The Beetles out of the way (they broke up), they were extremely successful. In the 80's it was the first glimmer of the typical 21st century boy band. With bands such as Duran Duran and Wham taking over the charts. Overall out of ten: 7.5 The 90's and modern day pop music: "Baby if you have to go away Don't think I can take the pain Won't you stay another day" "What ever I said What ever I done I didn't mean it I just want you back for good (Want you back Want you back Want you back for good)" "Uptown Girl You've been livin' in an uptown world..." Three verses of the modern day typical boy band music. The first by East 17, the second being Take That, and the third being Westlife. This rubbish makes the first third of the charts at the moment, 5 year old girls ask their rich parents to go and buy them the new A1 single. It's really quite sickening. Boy bands are being made all the time, many having one song going in at no. 13 and then not having any other hits. This is my most hated type of music. Their catc
hy lyrics, good looks and stupid dance routines are always a big hit with the girls. The music industry is now a days based around this type of music. Go to any Westlife gig, is their any point. You get thousands of 5 to 16-year-old girls, with their parents, screaming their heads off. So loud you can't hear the actual CD playing, because the bands don't actually sing live, no they just wave their arms around in stupid motions, with all the stupid audience trying to, not successfully because their all cramped in, do the same. It makes you want to blow chunks. The only good boy band theirs ever been is PJ & Duncan, singing such songs as: "Lets Get Ready To Rumble" and "Shout." The first, getting all the way to no. 17 in the charts. In 1996, history was made with the first very successful girl band, making their debut. Yes, The Spice Girls were destined for music history. Songs such as Forever and When 2 become blasted the five girls, Sporty, Posh, Ginger, Scary and Baby into the top of the charts. It was just the start of the rubbish that now makes up the another third of the charts. "5, 6, 7, 8" was Steps first single. It was dedicated to the numbers that H had just learnt that year. What? It was a big milestone for him. The final third of the charts is yes, you guessed it, boy and girl bands. These stupid bands are the same as the first two, apart from having boys and girls in the groups. Overall modern pop music is terrible, out of ten: 2 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Dance Music = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = In the late 80's and early 90's a new form of music was being formed. Samples of other song were being taken and changed, the speed, tune, etc. DJ's were being noticed and so became dance music. (You may have to excuse me for any mistakes, or lack of knowledge on this genre, it's not really my type of music.)
>Happy Hardcore: Upbeat tracks, made using other songs, or just from a keyboard. These tracks are usually very "happy" as you can probably tell by the name. Big events were held, such as Hardcore Heaven, Evolution and Helter Skelter. These took place in arenas full of mad for it party goers went for a good time. Usually an MC would shout stuff like "Let me hear you whistle" and "DJ Dougall on the decks" over the top of the music, which the DJ would be playing. You can still buy these events on box packs of tapes, if you're into that sort of thing. Great for having a good time. Out of ten: 6 Trance: There many different types of trance, I will just cover it in general. Very much none lyrical, usually a keyboard and big fat beats. Great if that's the type of thing for you. Out of ten: 4 Funky House: My personal favourite type of dance music. Usually with lyrics, a very much feel good type of music. Out of ten: 7.5 I don't really know many more types of dance music, I know I know, there's loads more, but I'm not very clever. Overall out of ten: 7 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Rap = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = Though not as worse as pop music, I think this is terrible music, definitely not for me. The start of it all: In the mid 80's bands such as The Sugar Hill Gang and Grand Master Flash were emerging from the underground, they used "fat beats" mixed with fast spoken lyrics to make a new style of music. This was known as rap. In the early 90's rappers such as MC Hammer (a personal favourite) and Vanilla Ice were making it big. It was the beginning of a big business. In the mid 90's rappers such as Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg were making the big time. Then, towards the late 90's, history was to be made. Yes, Eminem, a white rapper, released a song. Oh my god, a white r
apper. In the UK bands such as Oxide And Neutrino and So Solid Crew were also becoming more and more noticed (I don't know why.) It was the start of young, mostly black, men trying to speak fast over the top of a beat. Rubbish. Out of ten: 2.5 = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = My personal favourites = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = I like loads of music, but a few of my favourite bands are: · Embrace · The Cure · The Hives · The Strokes · Spititualized · System Of A Down · Moby · David Gray · R.E.M You may not like this music, that's fine. In less you like Westlife, Boyzone, Craig David, Steps, All Stars, Hear'say or Eminem that is. Overall out of ten: 10 *Update* As requested by some smelly person called mikeser27 who rated this only su while I've had 69 others rating it vu I shall do a short section on classical music, I don't have a clue about it so here goes... ============================================= Classical Music ============================================= This music contains virtually every possible instrument you can think of. From the "tinging" of a triangle to the "banging" of a drum, this is classical music. It's origins are worldwide drawing on traditions from many different countries. In western culture the medieval period saw the rise of classical music, with personallitys such as Hildergard Of Bingen. Much music at this time was written for religous purposes. In the Renaissance key composers include John Dowland and Henry VIII. Main oppertunities continued to be provided by the Church and The Courts. The Baroque period followed, with composers such as MonteVerdi, Purcell and J.S.Bach becoming influential. Music became longer and more complex with increasing emphasis on technical virtuosity. The Classical e
ra was dominated by Mozart and Beethoven. Graceful melodies replaced the heavy counterpoint of the Baroque. Music began extending to the middle classes with the rise of light opera and developments in music technology giving people the oppertunity to own a keyboard instrument and buy sheet music to play at home. The romantic era came next, with major composers such as Schubert and Richard Wagner. Its progress, though not entirely, was determined by the revolutions that swept Europe in 1848. The Modern era was characterized by rapid and radical change and political turmoil. It was dominated by composers like Stravinsky and Debussy. Nineteenth-century music had developed with an unprecedent awareness of its own history, and by 1900 the European misical legacy seemed as permanent and unshakable as the institutions- the opera houses, concert halls and conservatories- that nurtured it. The result amounted to the most far-reaching changes in music had experienced for 300 years. Info obtained from Classical Music Encyclopedia by Ted Smart. There you go mikester27, are you happy now?

- 02/06/03 In a "sort of related" point, I just want to dispell the recent urban myth being bandied about that Marylin Manson is the same bloke who played Fred Savages best mate Paul in "The Wonder Years". You know the one, skinny, a bit geeky looking, thick-rimmed specs, black hair. Well his name is Josh Saviano, and as far as I can gather, he is currently having a dry spell with regards his acting career. Marylin Manson's real name is Brian Warner, and apparently he still lives at home with his mum, who does all his washing for him, probably (NB: last statement is unsubstantiated).
Hop e that helps anyone upset by this rumour :) |

- 23/01/03 Good review but your opinions on metal are just ignorant. Marylin Manson is nothing more than glam rock (the new Gary Glitter). I bet you'll cringe to admit 'I used to love meatloaf' when your older!!! |
