Top Ten Tracks Downloaded Last Week Not by myself of course, but by a vague acquaintance, as I would never promote any suggestion of tolerating, or being involved in copyright theft! 1. Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson). I have always loved this song, be it Elvis, Michael Ball or a grudging acknowledgement of The Pet Shop Boys extraordinary effort in the late eighties. Nelson strips the song down to the bones, an acoustic delivery of exceptional proportion. 2. Spirit In The Sky (Gareth Gates). Well, maybe not the best record musically of our time, but a bloody good pop song originally done by err I cannot remember! Dr And The Medics got to number one in my sixth form days though. My "friend" has already paid £5 direct to Comic Relief, to ensure the charity does not lose out! 3. Boys Of Summer (DJ Sammy). Sammy has a remarkable habit of taking a classic eighties song, putting a new beat to it and a female vocal and my kids loving it. The Don Henley original is a classic of our time with a lyric that sounds suspiciously like "I can see you, your bra strap shining in the sun" !!. Maybe not. 4. Shine Silently (Nils Lofgren). Showing his age, my friend drove to work with Wogan and Radio Two the other day. This wonderful piece of music was played, with a country tinge, and was downloaded as a result. 5. Hill Farmers Blues (Mark Knopfler). Not his best ever piece of music, but still a pleasant meander through an unmistakeable guitar style. 6. I Just Called To Say I Love You (Stevie Wonder). At the request of my, err, his daughter, this one was recycled courtesy of WinMx. One of those that I cannot believe is not in the 500 strong CD collection owned by my friend! 7. Cry For Me (Solomon Burke). For those who saw Jools Holland and his New Year Hootyernanny show, you may remember a big old chap sat on a throne singing magnificently. This piece, taken from the film D
irty Dancing, was his best of an exceptional offering. 8. My Stunning Mystery Companion (Jackson Browne). Perhaps my favourite on this list, Browne produces an intelligent and pleasant song about life after the end of one relationship, identifying the potential for better things. You have to hear it to appreciate it. This will ensure that I actually hit CD Wow with an order for a real CD! 9. Arc Of A Diver (Steve Winwood). The title track of an album I never got round to buying, this is more evidence that Winwood is perhaps on of the most under rated musicians of our time. 10. We Got Tonight (Bob Seger And The Silver Bullet Band). Well, Lulu and Ronan did not do a bad job, but this is a superb piece of music by a fairly unspectacular band! Love the song. Do I have any sympathy with record companies having their copyright stolen via digital means? Not really. If I could not download, I would simply do without. By downloading, I get access to music that often prompts me to buy a full album. For me, that is profitable for record companies. Perhaps worldwide sales are falling as people are bored with the tosh currently being recorded! Thank you and good night!
