Advantages: Better world, You can trust Nanci, A Force For Good
Disadvantages: Sounds like nobody else
DO NOT BE FOOLED! Her girlish appearance often results in Nanci Griffith being described as “elfin” or “waiflike”, but appearances are deceptive… This lady has a steely determination to change the world or, at the very least, to change a few minds… Please listen to her lyrics… My most recent CD purchase (June, 2001 - mine was an import – UK release soon), was “Concerts for a Landmine Free World” . - Nanci’s live contribution, “It’s a Hard Life”, should be a lesson to us all… Children, and poets, LISTEN AND LEARN! If you are in doubt, please look at the company Nanci keeps (see also “Other Voices” and “Other Voices Too”). Nanci Griffith will be back on tour here in the UK, later this year… WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR? It has been brought to my attention that the above, being my first and previously unadulterated “Dooyoo Opinion”, lacked a little something, like, (shall we say?) “DETAIL”… Sorry… But I was born with a ridiculously misplaced sense of responsibility, and have never quite moved on… Stumbling upon an entry for “Nanci Griffith” - WITH NO “DOOYOO” OPINION, I thought I would dash off a little something, thus setting my world to rights whilst pointing a few kindred spirits in the right direction… Do-gooding all the way, I skipped the rules and was astonished, when next logging-in, to learn that, not only could I be paid for my opinion, but that it might even be possible to hit the “Dooyoo big time, if only I paid more attention…” (YES, I KNOW NOW THAT I HAD MISSED THE WHOLE POINT, but at least I’m owning up…) Worse still, it seems that there are people out there who are unfamiliar with the wonderful Nanci Griffith, a
one-time kindergarten teacher … So, sit up straight Class, and may I please have your attention? Nanci Griffith was Texas-born (in the 1950’s) and raised by liberal parents to become one of those wonderful (but all too rare) outward-looking Americans who has, through her songs and sheer determination, truly strived to change the world for the better. In my opinion, she has succeeded. It is impossible to classify this lady’s music. You will normally find her recordings in the “Country” section, which delights me, as she is certainly a magical storyteller in the true country music tradition, which has everything to do with real life and very little to do with what is today packaged and sold as “new country”. Strong on civil rights and global responsibilities, Nanci Griffith brings a terrific sense of history and good humour to many a song, the teacher having clearly moved on to educating all age groups. She is a magnificent live performer and remarkable recording artist, whatever your taste in music. I finished my original opinion: “Nanci Griffith will be back on tour here in the UK, later this year… WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?” Perhaps I should have added, “I’LL RACE YOU TO THE BOOKING OFFICE!”

- 10/03/02 Can I suggest that you update this opinion ? It desrves more reads to spraed the word some more .... |

- 13/08/01 she sang that? she wrote that? Now, THAT is useful.... the info you gave was useful but if you can think of anything else that would be of use to me and you include it in the op, let me know. Unlike Mr D who seems to know the existence of every band on the planet, I have NO idea who she is, what her views are and the kinds of messages in her songs.... good op nonetheless (I've never been much good at music ones) |
