Napster - Should Music Be Free To Share?

Advantages: Music

Disadvantages: Record Companies

Once I discovered napster, I was downloading songs to my hearts content.

I didnt give a monkeys about copywrite. And I still dont.

I was downloading tracks by artsts that were recommended to me and I was dowloading tracks by artists I knew but I didnt have. Live unusual cover versions were a paticular favourite. (ie Pet Shop Boys singing Rent with Suede, Shane singing What a wonderful World was another)

What happened after I downloaded it. If I liked it, I had to own it. So I went and bought it if it was available. I like to have the CD in my hand. I like the box and the sleeve notes. Im sad like that.....im a consumer.

A CD-R of 12 tracks downloaded feels and is cheap. A bought copy of the same twelve tracks doesnt.

In my opinion the only people who ever made CD-R's would never have bought the damn thing anyway.

So the record company's have stopped the greatest thing to ever happen to music. Better than radio, better than MTV and better than blank audio cassettes.

I discovered tons of music and I was excited by what I was hearing. I also spent more money on music during the time napster was fully functional than I had done since my student days.

I think we have been robbed. The music companies had the best promotion opportunity ever and they blew it.

Hows this for an idea. Pre release commercial CD's on napster. Trim 30 seconds off the end of each track and the teaser effect kicks in. Providing the music is any good of course. And thats were it all falls down. Most of what these big record companies are selling is crap and they know it. Napster exposed it in a funny sort of way.

This whole thing has really put me off buying music.

If you didn`t pay in the first place, how can you say you`ve been robbed?

I agree, good op.

You're right, Napster was useful for getting those obscure tracks that are unlikely to be released on CD. But the temptation to download new stuff was always there and the record companies had to protect their revenue.
