Advantages: Intimate venue, Meeting the band, After party
Disadvantages: Wish we'd got their earlier for a better view
I'd always thought that if I were to go to a No Doubt gig, I would dress really funky. Not that I don't make an effort when I usually go out but I just wanted to make sure I looked good for my favourite band. Sadly, this was not the case- Wednesday 23 Janruary 2002 and I've had a *&$£ day at work. All that is about to change though since I've just managed to get free tickets for the No Doubt gig an hour before it starts. Wahey, how exciting blah blah blah. I've also just realised that my hair looks awful and my clothes are alright but I've been in them since 6:30am. Oh, this is so annoying. I'm going to look like a really sad No Doubt fan. Anyway, after trying to sort my face out in a photo booth at Kings Cross station, I walk to the Scala (in the rain) and wait for my friend to turn up. And wait and wait! Finally, we got inside but the venue is quite small and was totally packed out and I was worried I wouldn't be able to see anything. I managed to stand on what appeared to be a shelf of some sort and had a really great view of the band. It was a bit uncomfy having to crouch under a ceiling for more than an hour but at least I felt tall for once! The band performed a variety of hits from their albums "Tragic Kingdom", "Return of Saturn" and "Rock Steady". Gwens vocals were really impressive and had improved immensely since I last heard her perform "I'm Just a Girl" a few years back. The set was decorated with the "Rock Steady" logo that's printed on the album sleeve. Gwen looked fantastic (as usual) in leopard print cropped trousers, "Rock Steady" bikini top over vest, trademark red pout and too cute platinum blonde hair extensions. All the band were present and everyone in the crowd loved their performance. Some of my favourite songs they performed were "New". "Magic's in the "Make-up" and
"Don't Speak". My friend and I were lucky enough to go to the after party which, took place in the same venue. There were free drinks so I can't really remember much (joke). Music was mainly raggae.- a style that features heavily on the bands latest album. I'm so glad I took my camera since I've got some great memories of the group. From a day that started out pretty crap, it was a really great night and I can't wait for the group to do another gig in the UK.

- 11/04/02 They are from America and the album isn't as heavy as "Return of Saturn". It's more reggae/rock - a strange combination but one that works extremely well. |
