Advantages: Great music, Talented musicians
Disadvantages: Some punk rock style is going
The Offspring band consists of Dexter (vocalist), Greg K (bass guitarist), Ron Welty (drums) and Noodles (lead guitarist). The bands first album was Ignition which was released in 1992. Then it was Smash which came in 1995. The next was Ixnay on the Hombre which was released just a year before the bi o our shops in 1995. The next to follow was Offspring (‘original’) which came out in g hit Americana which was in 1998. The last album they released and probably the most well known I Conspiracy of One. Dexter (the vocalist) has his guitars looked after by Steve on and off the stage. That may help you understand why Dexter’s Ibanez RB is always in perfect condition. Steve is an important member of the group. He also spends a lot of his time tuning Dexter’s guitar, building the rack systems and integrating guitar effects with a P.A. system. The group’s favourite song is Staring at the Sun. They like this song in particular because the crowd seem to get more exited when this song is played live. The lyrics are thought to be amazing by the group and they get huge adrenaline rushes but they don’t know why. The group’s favourite pass-time is surfing. Noodles is a top class surfer along with Greg but Dexter who has been surfing for just 6 months is learning quickly. The normally surf with technicians friends and they have even surfed with random people that they have just picked up off the beaches. My favourite album has got to be Americana. With tracks such as Walla Walla and kids aren’t alright it is a must get album. This album has got to be one the best albums ever released by anyone. On the recent tour to Moscow Noodles got pissed on honey-pepper vodka and then you had a few beers. Beer in Russian is pivo which is thought to be translated literally by Noodles as ‘vodka hangover remedy’. Outside the MTV studios in Moscow was surrounded by riot police as there was a big riot just outside the
studios. I recommend you listen to The Offspring as it will be an experience you will never forget. The Offspring started out as a band called Manic Subsidal in the Orange country, California in 1984. Greg and Dexter were in the cross-country team at Pacific High. One night after failing to get in to a Social Distortion show they formed a band with two fellow runners. Neither Greg nor Dexter could play instruments but by the summer they could play many tunes. Their first gigs were held upstairs in Greg’s house where on any weekend up to twenty would turn up. After Dexter had written a few songs like ‘Sonority Bitch’ and ‘Very Sarcastic’ the band headed to the recording studio. It was about now that their lead guitarist left, so Kevin Wassman known to many as Noodles took his place. He had graduated from Pacific a few years before the band. The drummer at the time was attending medical school so Ron Welty persuaded Dexter if he could take his place. The first 7” label was released in 1987. The band was not able to afford the additional quarter each to paste the front sleeves onto the backs. This meant that they had to do it themselves. 1000 copies were made and it took 2 and half years to sell all of them. In 1989, The Offspring got a contract with a small punk label, Nemesis. Here they recorded another 7”label ‘Baghdad’. The following year demo tapes were sent out to punk labels everywhere. They ended up with Epitaph. Here they released ‘Ignition’ which was not that big a success. The next to be released was ‘Come out and Play’ which received much rotation on MTV. This helped ‘Smash’ become the beat selling independent record of all time. ‘Ignition’ was re-discovered by new fans which made Dexter re-release it with his own label, Nitro. Album number four came out in January 1997 after which they toured to promote their new goods. During the year
they released 4 singles off the album but these did not sell as well as the first 2 off ‘Smash’. In 1997 Dexter and Jello Biafra started a charity called ‘FSU’-Freedom Starts Underground. The band did some gigs to raise money for the charity, which went to organisations such as AIDS Project LA, Poor People's United Fund, Trees Foundation and Amnesty International. Album number 5 was Americana which reached No. 2 in the billboard charts. The first single to be released off this album was ‘Pretty Fly for a White Guy’. This was a big sensation which reached No. 1 in most countries. In conclusion I think that Offspring and other punk rock groups are an asset to the world. LISTEN AND ENJOY!!!!!!! Cheers!!!!!!!

- 17/08/02 An interesting op, doghouse, but as I'm quite new to the band, I could use a little more info on the music too. Walla Walla is, I think, my favourite track to date. I have Conspiracy and Americana, but I could use some advise on which to try next. Regards, Jason. |

- 18/03/02 Good on the details, lacking on the music side of the band. And what about "Conspiracy of One"? Great live band as well, I've seen them twice!
