However, he normally comes to The City Hall, a smaller venue, which gives a better experience, and the audience is full of true Paul Weller fans, and the atmosphere there is electric. Our seats were level with the stage, so ...more

Premium Review Paul Weller in general: Paul Weller Live! (1259 words)
by - written on 26/10/02 (Very useful, 1223 readings)
Rating:

Many of you know if you have read my profile page that I am partial to a bit of Paul Weller. I had ?You Do Something To Me? as I walked down the aisle to be married instead of the wedding march, and I even converted my husband into a Weller fan, which is no mean feat I can assure you. I have seen Paul Weller live about 6 times now, however I will share my latest live experience with you all now. Friday 17th October - Newcastle Telewest Arena. I had known for months about this date, but as much as I love him, due to other commitments (building work on the house), I just did not have money spare to justify spending over sixty pounds on 2 tickets to see him. As the ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review What's Happening To The Modfather? (219 words)

The Jam were the best band on the planet. The Style Conncil were smooth, harmonious and soulful. So when Paul Weller kicked off his solo career in 1991,I was expecting big things. When we went to see him at the Sheffield Octogon centre,he was in great form, belting out old Jam songs as well as new,raw sounding material. His first solo album was quite good, the follow up,Wildwood was even better. Then came Stanley Road, the best album of his career.Great songs like You Do Something To Me and The Changingman showed that he could still pull a song out of the top drawer. His lastet album Heliocentric, released earlier this year,is nowhere near as good as it could have been.He ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Paul Weller in general: Weller (149 words)
by - written on 05/09/00 (Useful, 35 readings)

Paul Weller used to sing in the Jam until 1982, but then he formed the Style Council. They had their first hit in 1983 with a song called Speak Like a Child, it got to number four in the charts. Their debut album was Café bleu in 1984, it was followed in 1985 with Our Favourite Shop, which went to number one in the album charts. He made many more records such as My Ever Changing Moods, Shout To The Top, Walls Come Tumbling Down, and many more. People said he was one of the most powerful performers and song writers. I do not think so myself, I thought they were alright but nothing special. If you did like them you can now buy their new album called The Style Council's ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Stanley Road (208 words)
by - written on 27/07/00 (Useful, 18 readings)
Rating:

Paul Weller has been a mainstay of the music industry for the last 25 years. He started in the 70's with The Jam and then in the 80's went on to form the Style Council. In the 1990's he has made several successful solo albums, Wild Wood, Live Wood, Stanley Road, Heavy Soul, Heliocentric and a greatest hits album. I am going to concentrate my review on my favourite Paul Weller album, Stanley Road. In my opinion its probably his best solo album, combining fast paced rock and roll songs like Gilded Splinters, Woodcutters Son and Stanley Road, as well as slower more soulful tracks such as Broken Stones, Whirlpools End and Wings of Speed. This ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Paul Weller in general: The changing man (238 words)
by - written on 01/08/00 (Useful, 47 readings)
Rating:

Just as Oasis made a bigger splash with 'What's the story..' when it was a frankly substandard piece of work given the promise of 'Definitely Maybe', 'Stanley Road', with its attention grabbing Peter Blake cover and series of hit singles was a more noted record than it's predecessor, 'Wild Wood'. 'Wild Wood' was better, but 'Stanley Road' is still something to remember, especially when the Modfather has now loosed his talents to the wind and released gibberish like 'Heliocentric'. The singles 'Changingman' and the title track were excellent, clean rock songs, but there's a lot to be ...  Read the complete review
