It's the fans that make the band however, and particularly those who sign up to the Ten Club fan club, who are rewarded every year with great access to concert tickets, quarterly magazines and the annual Christmas single, w...more

Premium Review Pearl Jam in general: The Grandads of Grunge (732 words)

Rating:

1991 saw the emergence of Grunge music, lifeless pop acts were finally pushed out of the way and we thankfully waved goodbye to a decade of music that on the whole won't be remembered as a classic era. At the forefront were Nirvana with their iconic lead singer Kurt Cobain and their album Nevermind. Right behind them were Pearl Jam led by Eddie Vedder and their album Ten. Musical success can be judged by a lot of things but ultimately it's record sales and when it comes down to it then Ten sold more than Nevermind. Ten brought us some classic rock anthems such as Alive and Once but the stand out track on the album would have to be Jeremy. The dark tale ...  Read the complete review

Having been a mega fan of Pearl Jam for 8 years now, I eventually took it upon myself to join their Tenclub! This year’s newsletter (it’s more like a bigger version of the booklets found with each of their albums) is filled with photos of the band on stage interspersed with the usual strange drawings and designs. Also included are letters from Jeff Ament and Mike McCready describing their times on tour throughout the past year. The centrefold competition of issue 17 gives you the opportunity to design clothes for a paper doll cutout of Mike McCready complete with his own guitar! Cool gimmick! The ‘Ask George’ section seems to be a ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pearl Jam in general: under-rated in this country (228 words)

Pearl Jam were introduced to me about 5 years ago! a friend of mine had an "alternative" cd from Malaysia. Alternative in quotation markes as it was both alternative musically and was bought from a market stall for 50 pence and was therefore not fully legit! Soul asylum and pearl jam! Since then i have never looked back. My tastes changed but i never took to pearl jam! Two songs, however, remain favourites:- Daughter and Jeremy. That was it two songs were all i wanted to hear. BUT last weekend i came across PJ live in OZ at Melbourne Tennis centre. What an album! Jeremy and daughter but with 20 odd other PJ classics. Sheer quality i wish ...  Read the complete review

Just a quick opinion to let others know about the live albums that Pearl Jam have released. All 25 shows from the european tour have been released as a double CD each. So this means that you can wonder down to your local HMV and buy the gig that you went to! I think that this is a great idea and that other bands should follow suit, I can't think of a better memento you could have especially if the gig you went to was as good as the one I saw.(Manchester, 4th June 200) You get the live crowed and all the banter, as well as all the songs, which are performed superbly. A master stroke! ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Pearl Jam in general: The best band to emerge from the early 90s Seattle Scene (191 words)

Pearl Jam never seem to get the credit that their grunge rivals Nirvana and Soundgarden do, yet 18 years after the band's debut album 'Ten', they are still going strong, selling out arenas across the globe, headlining festivals and producing strong new albums. From the early 'grunge' sound of Ten and Vs, the band fought against Ticketmaster's monopoly on US concert venues and ticket prices, fighting to keep prices low for their fans wherever possible. Vitalogy, No Code and Yield were all great albums in their own right, before Binaural, Riot Act and 2006's Pearl Jam were released to middlin reviews from the media.
