Premium Review Pet Shop Boys in general: 'Release' The new album from The Pet Shop Boys (1048 words)

I was lucky enough to see The Pet Shop Boys live at Brixton Academy this Summer, and they really are one of the best live acts around as far as I'm concerned. They mixed songs from their latest album with all the old classics, and the crowd just couldn't get enough. That's one hot, crowded, sweaty, explosive July night that I won't forget in a hurry! Many die hard Pet Shops Boys fans have expressed bafflement and displeasure at 'Release', an album which is very unlike anything they've ever done in the past; less electronic, synthesised dance tracks and more mellow 'pop' and ballads. Personally, I love it. It's a melodic, ...  Read the complete review

Pet Shop Boys new album; Release. Amidst what has been dubbed an imminent ?80s synth pop revival? by The Guardian, as bands such as Ladytron and Fischerspooner enjoy relatively high success in album charts across Europe, the kings of the genre themselves return to the shelves this month, two years after their Nightlife LP, with Release. The Pet Shop Boys formed in 1981, their was two people Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe. Their records were catchy and very popular. Chris Tennant used to be the assistant editor of Smash Hits when in 1981 he met Chris Lowe in a hi-fi shop. They spent two years trying to make it into the big time without success. Then in 1984they had a hit with West End Girls but not in this country only in France and Belgium. Then in 1986 they re-released West End Girls and it was a smash hit here and in America it went to number 1. Their first album Please was released in 1986 and it contained several good records such as Tonight is forever, Later Tonight, and I Want a Lover Tonight plus ...  Read the complete review

THE BEST (112 words)

The Pet Shop Boys are one of the few successful chart acts ever. With over 30 Top 20 hit singles in the past 15 years . These songs were all hits, West End Girls, What Have I Done To Deserve This, Always On My Mind, Left To My Own Devices, New York City Boy, Being Boring, You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You're Drunk, It's A Sin. They've had their lean years and undistinguished years including a scraping-the-bottom-of-the-barrel Comic Relief single but all in all, Pet Shop Boys prove that smart, insightful words and gloriously dumb music can be used intelligently, humorously and provocatively. ...  Read the complete review
